The unpretentiousness and endurance of the tarpan are excellent qualities that Polish peasants tried to recreate by catching wild horses and crossing them with domestic ones. This happened mainly to the east of the San River. It is also known that the last real forest tarpans were kept in the Zamoyski menagerie near Zamostye, but in 1808 they were distributed to local peasant farms.
