Suffolk Punch has ancient roots. Its type is mentioned in chronicles from 1506. It was an old breed descended from the English and Norman horses, the latter having come to the island with the soldiers of William the Conqueror. At the end of the XVIII century. this breed has been improved. Its founder and ancestor of all Suffolk Punches is considered to be a stallion born in 1768 in Woodbridge. It was owned by Thomas Crisp of Ufford, and the horse was then called the "Horse of Ufford". At the time, the breed was referred to as the Suffolk Bay. The Suffolk Punch Breeders' Association was founded in 1877
