Mafia Island Diving A community focused, environmentally conscious dive centre on Mafia Island, Tanzania Our mini refresher includes 4 skills and usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.

Mafia Island Diving is an owner-managed, community focused, environmentally conscious PADI dive centre located on Utende beach, overlooking Chole bay — the heart of Tanzania’s oldest and largest marine protected area.

~ About Us & The Centre ~
We're a multi-award winning dive centre that has been in operation for almost a decade

Our diver to guide ratio is never more than 4:1 and our courses a

re taught on demand. We dive from traditional dhows — wood sailing boats which have been exploring the coastline for centuries. Our dive team is 95% Tanzanian, and made up mostly by Mafians who have spent years perfecting their vocation through MID’s training program, seeing many flourish from assistant snorkel guides to Divemasters. We’ve invested in the training of 50 Tanzanian scuba divers to various levels over the past 9 years via different programs and initiatives. We offer a ‘valet service’ for diving in the sense that we want our guests to do as little as possible. We will set up, load, unload, rinse and store your equipment unless specifically asked to do otherwise. We offer a complimentary mini refresher to any guest who hasn’t dived within the last 6 months. We can arrange it to be done in confined water off our beachfront or at the start of a normal dive.

Milimani is the Swahili word for "mountains." Dive this reef and you'll see why. 🏔️
Huge coral formations rise from the sea floor like a submerged mountain range, packed with schools of fish. The structure here is impressive and the reef is so long we divide it across three different dive sites and this is just the central part.
Look inside the crevasses and find what's hiding : lobsters, moray eels and torpedo rays can be found there.

At first, you might think someone lost their scrunchie on the reef during a dive.
But look closer and you’ll notice the tiny dots; each one an individual embryo; arranged in delicate ribbons.

They’re nudibranch eggs. As if the adults weren’t beautiful enough, even their eggs are works of art.

From juvenile to adult 🐠

Blink and you’d never guess they’re the same fish 👀

The emperor angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator) undergoes one of the most dramatic colour changes on the reef.
Same species, completely different look — nature doesn’t do subtle.

Last week was pretty special 🐸🐟

We spotted an unusually high number of hairy frogfish along the shore — something we don’t get to see very often.

Frogfish are masters of camouflage. Part of the anglerfish family, they use a small lure on their head to attract prey 🎣 They may look slow, but their strike is one of the fastest in the ocean.

Some species go through a so-called hairy phase, developing filament-like skin that helps them blend perfectly with algae, sponges and coral rubble 🌿

Meet the Peacock-Tail Anemone Shrimp (Periclimenes brevicarpalis) 🦐

This small, nearly transparent shrimp lives right in the tentacles of sea anemones — safe, hidden, and perfectly adapted. It uses the anemone’s mucus to blend in, letting it move freely without being harmed.

Its body is dotted with white spots, and its tail rings out in bright orange and black. Sometimes, you’ll spot a pair sharing the same host, gently feeding on leftovers and tiny plankton.

The kind of detail you only find when you stop rushing and really look.
