油門:
現在我們來到開車的第三個部分,這是油門應用。一旦有了我們已經練習刹車和轉向,那第三個部份就是油門。油門應該是很簡單,但是真的不是那嘛簡單。那麼大多數人的油門應用是有什麼問題?我看到的是大多數時間是太多油門或是下油門的時間錯誤。怎麼會這樣?我看到很多是大多數人不知道什麼時候應用油門。有時太早,有時候太晚了,有時候還不夠,有時候太多了。大多數這些問題來自於在彎角前沒有完成正確刹車和轉向,無論是刹車太晚還是太早要是刹車和轉向做的正確,油門就踩的下去。油門應該是這樣的踩(0-3-7-10-10),0為沒踩,10為全油門。特別是大馬力的車更是應該用順暢的油門。油門要是可以早點下,我們就可以在跑道或道路上比別人快。但是我在跑道上看到都是很晚才踩油門。為什麼?因為大多數人都刹車殺太晚,車都還沒過完彎所以根本沒辦法把油門踩下去。我們以後在深入討論這個問題。所以先開始練習如何早點踩下油門。有問題的話,歡迎提問。最後,永遠記得在練習這些技巧時,最好有專業教練陪同,並注意自身與周遭的安全。

Throttle:
Now we come to the easier part of the three, which is throttle application. Once we have our braking and steering practice, then throttle should be easy. But most time it is not. So what is the problem with most people’s throttle application? Most time it is wrong timing with too much throttle application. How so? What i see a lot is that most people don’t know when to apply the throttle. Sometimes too early, sometimes too late, sometime not enough and sometimes too much. Most of these problem comes from not setting up the braking and steering properly for the corner, either from braking too late or too early. If the setup is correct, then throttle application should come naturally at the right time. Learn to be smooth with the throttle like (0-3-7-10-10) with 0 being off throttle to 10 being full throttle. Cars that have high power should really be driven with smooth throttle. Throttle if can be apply earlier is the key to being fast either on track or on road. That is common sense but most time I see at track is very late throttle, why? Because most people leave their braking too late and often time cannot pick up the throttle early. We will get deeper into the topic later on. So start practicing on how to pick up the throttle earlier.

我們來談談轉向,大多份的人都知道應該把手放在3和9的位置。 那很好。 但是,一般人在轉向方面會犯什麼樣的錯誤呢? 大部份的人的問題是在轉動方向盤的速度和轉向角度。 大多時候,當我在跑道上或山路上看學生開,他們常常轉方向盤的速度都太慢了。 但是比較嚴重的問題是他們在轉方向盤的角度,常常他們用的角度不足以讓汽車轉入彎道頂點。 這些都可以練習,讓車開的好一點。 轉向速度可以用在很窄的彎道像髮夾彎來提高轉向速度。 轉向角度是比較大的問題,大多部份的人在開車時會怕用太多轉向角會讓車失控。 但是我們限制轉向角度,我們通常不會有足夠的角度將車推到彎頂點。 所以我們要多練習用多一點角度和學習相信車子。有問題的話,歡迎提問。最後,永遠記得在練習這些技巧時,最好有專業教練陪同,並注意自身與周遭的安全。

Steering.

After braking we should talk about steering, Most people know how to position their hands at the 3 and 9 position. That is good. But other than holding the steering wheel at the right position, what kind of mistake are they making with it? Mostly it’s the speed and the angle that they turn the steering wheel. Most time when I watch student on track or on road, they are generally too slow turning the steering wheel. The other serious problem they also have is the angle they use on the steering wheel, it is often not enough to make the car rotate. All these can be practice to make one’s driving a lot better. Steering speed can be practice doing tight turns and increasing steering speed. Steering angle is often the big problem, most people when they drive, they are worried that using more steering angle will cause lost of control. But by limiting the steering angle, often the car will not have enough angle to pitch it into the apex. Start by practicing and trusting the car.

Braking:
Let’s talk about how people normally use their brakes. When we are doing some performance driving, brake control is one technique that is so critical to being good at it or not having control when needed. One thing that I see how student brake is that their brake timing is not very right. They tend to brake from (0-6-6-8-9-10-0), 0 as in brake off and 10 as maximum braking, but to have good brake control, the sequence should be (0-10-10-8-6-4-0). Why? Because we want the maximum braking as soon as possible and we use brake release to manipulate the movement of the car as we enter the corner. This is a deep thought process of driving and i will slowly take time to get into it. For now, one can start by practicing on how to apply their brakes.

談完刹車以後,我們來談談平衡。 我認為大多數人對開車的平衡不太了解,因為大部份的人不能好好的使用剎車。 為什麼我們開車需要平衡呢?因為開車就是物理和重力的道理。我們在開車就是用4個輪胎在接觸道路,所以成為一名好的車手,我們需要正確的利用我們的輪胎。當然要是我們的4個輪胎能達到平衡是最好。 但是理論上是可能,但在現實開車時是相當困難的。 但要成為一個更好的車手,我們可以在開車時把車平衡起來。 那麼如何在汽車中做到這一點,我們可以用剎車,轉向和油門。 如果可以控制重量轉移,那麼我們就可以平衡車輛。 當我們開車要平衡起來,那麼需要了解和感受一輛車的重量轉移並利用這個道理。 一旦可以學習到重轉移的藝術,駕駛就會變得更有趣了。有問題的話,歡迎提問。最後,永遠記得在練習這些技巧時,最好有專業教練陪同,並注意自身與周遭的安全。

Balance:
After talking about braking, let’s have a short talk on balance. I think most people don’t understand much about driving with balance since most can’t use their brakes well enough. Why do we need to drive with balance, simply driving is about physics and gravity. Contact patch is made with the 4 tires and we have a suspension. To be a good driver, we need to load the tires properly, ideally spread the load between the 4 tires. Theoretically possible but in real life it is quite hard. But to be a better driver, we can always try to balance the car when we drive. So how to do that in car, really it is with brakes, steering and throttle. If one can control the weight transfer, then he can balance the car better than the one that doesn’t. So to drive with balance, then one needs to understand and feel the weight transfer of a car and manage it. Once someone can learn the art of weight transfer, driving becomes much more fun.

我們來談談刹車。 這是大多數人做得不好的技術之一。 有幾個原因,我們來談談如何可以改善這個問題。 為什麼人們無法好好的用刹車,第一,他們很難判斷刹車的距離。第二,剎車的高G力。 在保時捷psm上,最大記錄的G力大約是1.3G而加速度大約是.75G。 通常,我們的刹車效率比我們的油門高很多。 但大多數人不知道如何處理高G值的感受,所以大部份的人都沒有用滿他們的刹車。 一個簡單的練習就是在一個空曠的地方練習踩刹車,盡可能的加快剎車速度。 當學生在安全的場地練到了刹車力道的控制,那就可以在路上或跑道上練習踩刹車。

Braking:
Let’s talk about braking. It is the one of the technique that most drivers cannot do well. There are several reason for this and examine a few and explain what we can do to make our braking better. Why can’t people do braking right, first, they have a hard time judging brake distance and not use the high G force it create with hard braking. On a Porsche with on board G meter, maximum G force is around 1.3G while acceleration is about .75G. Normally, our braking has more power than our throttle. But most people cannot deal with the high G load the braking create so they just don’t use enough braking while driving. One simple exercise I do with students is to find a empty parking lot and get up to speed and use the brakes as hard as possible. Student can only start getting a feel of their brakes from using it properly in a safe location. Once the student can pass the test with brake feel, then we can start applying to the road or track.
