[World Masters Games 2025] - First Thoughts

6 months of preparation and training finally concluded. At the end of last year's Asia Champs in Shanghai, really thought it would be my last comp. Then my old badminton coach ._woo told me about this competition that included weightlifting. And without much thought, I signed up. I think it is a privilege to compete in competitions and as long as I am able, I will do so. I'm never one to let excuses get in my way. And I want to inspire others and help people get to be able to experience things like this because this was really an awesome event.

It was inspiring see athletes up to 100 years young still competing in sports and it really showed me how important it is to stay fit, but also having the health to do so.

Thank you and for this wonderful event. For my actual competition I will recap that later. But I just want to use this post to say how grateful I feel to compete, doing the things I love to do. This is really all bonus to what I do everyday at . And how I feel everyone should have a healthy lifestyle of exercise.

And of course my Coach for the weekend. Thank you .photography

After 5+ months of preparation, the weekend has finally come to compete in the World Masters Games for weightlifting.

At the beginning of the year after the holidays, like everyone, needed a reset and a goal to get my diet back on track a little bit. Although I won't say my nutrition is bad, I just wanted to be a bit better and be accountable with myself. So decided to drop from my usual 71ish kg to compete at 67kg. My goal was to drop 1kg per month gradually adjusting my nutrition habits. Starting with no baked goods, to slowly cutting rice once or twice a week for dinner, to eliminating rice completely for dinner. Last month I made my weight for the preparation comp at PBC and felt great.

This past month or maintaining weight was actually harder for my training, but I've been sticking to it and will see how the results are.

Regardless of the results, I am very happy with the process. Having the discipline to stick with it is one thing, but the other important factor is having a routine and someone who does it with you and supports you. This whole way .photography
has been there, and my bros and even though they didn't have to...it was good to encourage each other to stick to the plan.

Grab a buddy. Write down something you want to eliminate from your diet, or add a healthy diet habit, and try to do it for a month. It'll be worth it!

This one's for you grandma. What a way to finish off the week celebrating your life ☝🏾

Everything going according to plan since January 1st. From 71kg to 67kg, losing 1kg per month while maintaining the strength. Lots of ups and downs with training but luckily able to come through with the heaviest lifts I've made in about 5+ years.

Wasn't easy but when you have the training partners and team that I have it all makes a difference. This is not possible without you guys.

Thank you to everyone who made the effort to come out and support. Thank you PBC for organizing the event.

Journey's not over. 1 more month to go, see you in Taipei.

So proud of my bro for all that he and his team have done to grow CrossFit in Hong Kong. Final time working out at FPG was bittersweet, from day 1 till now we went through all the highs and lows. Watching each other's gym grow together, each with their own uniqueness - is what makes CrossFit gyms so special. After so many years of relentless effort, passion, and resilience, trying to make a small difference in people's lives. Running a business, especially in the right way, is no small feat—sleepless nights, endless challenges, and unwavering dedication.

Through it all, FPG stayed true to themselves and inspired countless individuals to push their limits and embrace a healthier lifestyle. While it’s tough to see this journey come to an end, the impact they've made will last forever. People can try to tear you down, but real people will respect what you've done. Here’s to the lessons learned, the lives changed, and the strength to embrace new beginnings.

Asia Fitness Championships - Final Event

This event was fun, nice fast one to push...even though I didn't have it in me to push. With the stadium roof open the atmosphere was electric. I really wanted to soak it all in, especially with Su in the stands. First thing I did after completing this was to say thank you to her and everyone around for supporting throughout the weekend.

Afterwards, like any other CrossFit workout we go support our peers. Although we were competing against each other all weekend, there was nothing but support and encouragement amongst us in the back. That's what CrossFit is about, we all know how much hard work needs to be put in to make it into this competition floor. We leave no athlete behind, just like in our classes no matter what CrossFit box you're at.

It was a great way to see the competition end with a race like this for the Masters.

Asia Fitness Championships - Surprise!

A break from the competition recaps. Between events I usually cheer on the rest of the team. After one of the events I was doing my thing cleaning up. So I looked around to see where our team manager Grace was and I saw her about 5 rows back recording. I was thinking the event already finished why she still recording. Then I look around and see some girl wearing a hat standing in front of me. Lo and behold, it's my crazy wife again surprising me with a early morning flight over to watch my last day of competition on Shanghai, staying in the city for 24 hours. Even though she hinted that she wanted to come, I said no as she had to work the day before and it wouldn't make sense.

You can tell that I was surprised (last pic), happy, mixed with a little angry that she again didn't listen. But in the end of course I was happy to have her there to experience the competition with me. Even though I don't condone actions like this thank you for coming to support ❤️

Also that the rest of the team knew about her plan to come and didn't say a word! You all so sneaky!

Asia Fitness Championships - Event 3

This was the event I was looking forward to most during the weekend. Something that was kind of in my wheelhouse, gymnastics.

Going into the weekend I kind of thought I didn't belong there, narrowly squeeking in by taking the last qualifying spot. All these athletes are so much fitter than me, I don't work hard enough...all of this negative talk. But it all changed.

During this workout, everytime I got off the GHD...I was one of the first headed to the other side of the floor to the wall walks. I was also almost always finished with my wall walks first when I looked down the row of competitors. And I started to believe, believe that I belonged in there with my peers. I didn't get to the AFC Finals by chance, I got there through years of hard work and dedication to the sport - being as well rounded as possible.

Every single rep in the last round I could see Grace cheering me on. And I pushed as hard as I could because I know a lot of people wished me well. We all train together and me being on the floor is as much as them all being there with me. When the final horn sounded, I said to myself.

I deserve to be here.

Asia Fitness Championships - Day 2

How cool is this venue? Under the bright lights in a tennis stadium used for international events. Kudos to the organizing committee of the AFC 🫡

3 weeks ago while practicing for this event I hurt my back to a point walking was very uncomfortable. Luckily I had the help of from and my go to chiro Dr Chow to get my body back into lifting shape this weekend.

Having that bad test experience I already had negative thoughts creep into my head. But I told myself that "it's a win that I'm here competing on this floor under the stadium lights, have fun with it". Even though the first 2 rounds I could really feel the pain in my finger (can see how I wrapped it up in the pics), it went away when the adrenaline kicked in. I actually really enjoyed the toughness of this event, slow grunt work...again things that I'm not good at. Love having my weakness exposed so I know what I need to work on, which is a lot of things. That's the beauty of CrossFit.

First thing I did when the workout finished was to run over to thank my support crew. Really want to thank our supporters that flew all the way to cheer for us. I heard all the yells and screams. It really made this experience worth it to share it with all of you.

Asia Fitness Championship - Day 1

Arriving 🛬 into the city the morning of the start of a competition is never ideal but luckily my start time was one of the later heats. I knew this event would be my weakest but just told myself to keep moving the whole way. The obstacle course was super fun, probably my favourite part besides the part I was overly ambitious on the slippery rope and slid down..resulting in a ripped finger. Had to spend some time washing off the blood and disinfecting it during the race. Happy to be part of something so big, the whole day individuals and teams went through heat by heat.

Never want to touch that sled thing again...why bother putting wheels on something that won't move 😅

Happy to watch and cheer on Allen, Veronica, Ed, Coco, and other familiar faces as well!
