Yesterday at the Volkano practice field, we welcomed a truly distinguished guest: Jamey Storvick.
As a veteran scout for the Cincinnati Reds, Jamey has been responsible for discovering top-tier talents like Chen Yung-Chi and Lin Sheng-En. For those of us who have played and loved the game but knew we didn't have the tools to chase the professional dream, being a "scout" seems like the ultimate job. What could be more dreamlike than making a career out of simply watching baseball?
We often imagine scouts as strictly professional and stern figures. However, meeting Jamey for the first time was like meeting a kind, grandfatherly figure (though he insisted on being called "Uncle").
Despite our brief time together, his pure, unadulterated passion for the game was evident in every detail:
Zero Pretense: He bonded effortlessly with the young kids, never holding back a loud word of praise when he saw a great play.
Meticulous Coaching: Whenever he spotted a minor flaw in a child's swing, he would patiently offer guidance on the spot.
Total Dedication: He even stepped onto the mound to throw batting practice, and to top it off, he personally repaired my son’s glove.
Curious, I asked my son, "What was Jamey doing with your glove?"
My son replied excitedly, "He fixed the loose lacing at the top!"
In that moment, it hit me: a scout’s eye doesn’t just capture a player’s potential; it captures the smallest details and needs. As a father, I felt a mix of humbleness and immense respect—this is the keen observation of a world-class scout.
I’m not sure what a scout "should" look like, but our brief encounter made one thing clear: Jamey Storvick truly, deeply loves baseball. It’s a love that has nothing to do with contract numbers or signing bonuses; it’s about the simple, approachable joy of sharing the game with children on a patch of grass.
Thank you, Jamey, for visiting us. While a scout’s job is to discover talent, your presence on the field that day managed to scout out the most primitive and passionate love for baseball within each of us.
Thank you for such a wonderful afternoon. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
