In Memory of 五哥 (張福和) & Crucial Hornet Safety on the Trail
We are deeply shocked and heartbroken by the tragic loss of 張福和 (五哥), a respected figure in Taiwan’s search and rescue (SAR) and outdoor community, who recently passed away after a severe hornet attack in the mountains.
Many in the outdoor community knew 五哥 for his dedication, his selfless service, and his signature bandana on the trail. Back in 2022 during a safety sharing event, I met him in person—a memory that will always stay with me.
Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and SAR teammates. We also send our strongest positive energy and thoughts to his girlfriend, wishing her a full and steady recovery during this critical time.
Hornet Safety: Why RUNNING is Your #1 Defense
Whenever I lead group hikes, trail maintenance, or events, I always give my team an upfront rule: "If anyone hears or spots hornets, don't hesitate, don't fight them, and don't freeze—RUN in a safe direction away from the source!"
Briefing your hiking partners before you step onto the trail is essential so everyone reacts instantly without panic.
1. Allergic Reaction vs. Venom Toxicity
•Allergic Reaction (Anaphylaxis): Can happen from just 1 or 2 stings. This is where carrying an EpiPen or oral antihistamines can buy critical time.
•Toxic Shock (Venom Poisoning): Species like the Black-bellied Hornet (黑腹虎頭蜂) carry extreme toxicity. If stung repeatedly, the massive dose of venom causes muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) and acute kidney failure. There is no antidote pill for severe venom toxicity—only hospital treatment.
•The Takeaway: Medicine helps with allergic reactions, but preventing multiple stings by running away immediately is the single most effective way to save your life.
2. Essential Rules in an Attack
•Pre-Hike Briefing: Before starting, make sure everyone in your group knows to evacuate immediately if hornets are triggered.
•RUN Instantly: Cover your head and neck, and run fast for at least 50–100 meters in a safe direction. Do not squat down or try to swat them.
•Wear Light Colors: Avoid black and dark-colored clothing, as hornets react aggressively to dark shades.
