Today’s topic will be The Thermic Effect of Food. The thermic effect of food is the energy that our body uses while we are digesting, absorbing and disposing of food. The amount of calories burned depends on the composition of the food that we consume. Proteins take a longer time to digest, that is why our body uses about 30% of the energy you get from eating protein just to digest it. Carbohydrates, depending on their molecular length, use about 5-15%. Fats are the easiest macronutrient to digest, that is why only 0-5% is used during digestion.
