Most of my clients tend to have a love/hate relationship with leg day. And that’s usually because we like to include exercises that leave them with nowhere to hide.

In the moment, there’s no worse place to be than at the bottom of a single leg split squat. But they understand the importance of these exercises and feel the benefits in their strength and balance, which crosses over into every day life or their hobbies and sports.

When creating a balanced training program, it’s important to have a balance of both bi-lateral and uni-lateral movements.

Before you get lost in the hype and confusion. Bi-lateral essentially means both limbs/legs. And uni-lateral means single limb/legs.

In today’s session I used an even mix of both for the hinge and squat pattern movements, to train both strength and stability in the lower body.

🦵🦵 Bi Lateral (Both Legs)

💥 Barbell Back Squat
💥 Barbell Romanian Deadlift (RDL)

🦵Uni-Lateral (Single Leg)

💥 Bulgarian Split Squat
💥 Single Leg RDL (with knee drive)

Bilateral exercises allow for greater stability because the center of mass can be balanced between both limbs, this enables us to create more force and lift heavier weights.

Unilateral exercises are a great way to prevent and treat any muscular imbalances, because when you train one side of the body you also stimulate the opposite side. This creates cross-education of the muscles. We indirectly stimulate the non-working side of the body to improve strength in the unbalanced area.

Don’t forget to breathe 🧘‍♂️

Do you start your week all guns blazing, reacting to everything that comes your way and putting out fires in your personal life as well as work or business? 🔥

Or do you take the time needed to get focused, gain some clarity and catch your breath for a moment?

Before you tell yourself you DON’T have the time needed to sit crossed legged on a meditation pillow for hours on end. Ask yourself what DO you have the time for?

Sure it would be great if we all had a spare 30 minutes to sit around and do absolutely nothing (imagine that). But it only takes a quick look at the screen time usage on people’s phones to see that most of us have more spare time on our hands than we like to admit.

As little as 2 minutes of focused breathing can be enough to balance your nervous system, rapidly lower your stress levels or increase your energy.

Whether it’s while you’re waiting for the kettle to boil for your morning brew, on your commute to work or after a high stress meeting at work...

Just find 2 minutes out of your day to do nothing but breathe. You’ll be amazed at the positive impact it can have on your body as well as your mind.

I love using Giant Sets with my clients during a higher volume training phase. They’re an awesome way of improving muscular and cardiovascular endurance as well as allowing you to ramp up the intensity in a session for a more metabolic effect.

📝 Move from one exercise to the next without rest.

📈 You can do this for 8-12 reps on each exercise on a controlled tempo, or go for 60 seconds each exercise instead. The main thing is creating tension through every stage of each movement.

⏱ Hit this for 4 to 5 rounds with no more than 2 mins rest between sets. ⁣

3️⃣ Train Like A Beast!

Far too many of us are guilty of living sedentary lifestyles. We’ve become inactive from doing jobs in offices, sat at desks or in cubicles.

We rarely spend any time doing the things our bodies were designed to do. Ensuring that we can move freely without pain through wide ranges of motion.

As humans, and particularly as men we need to make sure our body is strong and resilient enough to carry out the functional tasks of our day.

We can do this by lifting heavy things. Squatting, hinging, pressing, pulling, carrying heavy objects.

We should condition the body. By running, rowing, hiking, crawling, climbing, sprinting. Moving our bodies through space.

Developing explosiveness through jumping, throwing, slamming and swinging.
