Many in the Jiu‑Jitsu world are shocked and deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Master Márcio “Macarrão” Stambowsky yesterday. BJJ has lost not only an 8th‑degree coral belt, Rolls Gracie protégé, and lifelong teacher, but the world has lost an exceptional human being. Professor Juliano called Master Márcio a legend and said he will miss his friendship immeasurably. Master Márcio’s technical brilliance, humility, and devotion to his students left a mark on everyone who trained with him. Rest in peace, mestre — your name and your lessons live on.

As many mourn the loss of a legend, it seems apt to look back at the incredible story of when Chuck Norris discovered Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu in Rio de Janeiro and how it influenced his training.

Chuck Norris wasn’t just a screen icon—he was a lifelong martial artist who sought to train with members of the Gracie family, including Helio Gracie, the founder of Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu. That famous encounter in Rio—where Norris sparred with Helio and was choked unconscious—left a lasting impression on Norris and opened the door to further grappling study. He continued training with Gracie family members after returning to the U.S., integrating their methods into his practice and showing decades of dedication and tenacity. He started as a striking specialist, but like many top fighters, he added BJJ to complete his skill set and ultimately earned a BJJ black belt—proof of his commitment to mastering the whole game.

It is said that Norris would not promote students of his Chun K*k Do system to black belt unless they possessed the skill level of a BJJ blue belt or higher — a reflection of how deeply he respected Jiu‑Jitsu's fundamental grappling techniques. Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu fills the gaps striking can’t—control, escapes, and finishes when a fight goes to the ground or an attacker closes distance. That’s why we learn BJJ: to be ready for the realities of self‑defense.

Rest in peace, Chuck Norris — thank you for demonstrating the value of open‑mindedness and a lifelong commitment to learning, and for showing the importance of training the whole game.

This week saw a monumental moment for ASIS primary school students who learn BJJ with Professor Juliano as part of their curriculum, as they were presented with their first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi, symbolizing their induction into the wonderful world of BJJ.

As they don their traditional kimonos for the first time, they’re not just wearing a gi; they’re taking their first step into a supportive community that values respect, discipline, and growth. Our goal is to instill these principles in young practitioners and empower them to face challenges both on and off the mat.

Professor Juliano passionately believes in nurturing the future of BJJ enthusiasts, and with him leading the way, we are committed to spreading the art of Jiu-Jitsu, guiding them to be good human beings.
