A community art project returns on its 10th anniversary
Songkhla’s old town, Thailand

A decade ago, Thai contemporary artist Navin Rawanchaikul spent time getting to know the old town and people of the city of Songkhla in Southern Thailand, then created the community art project O.K. Nakhon - Singora Diary in response. Now he is revisiting Songkhla’s old town, both physically and conceptually, with O​.K​. Nakhon - Singora Diary​ 2 – an exhibition that expands on the community narratives uncovered in 2016 through a series of new artworks and conversations. Deriving its title from nakhon – one of the Thai words for city – and Singora – the historical name for the city and province of Songkhla – the project seeks to create space for community members to share their memories, stories and perspectives, and to reflect on the past, present and future of this ancient​ port city.

Rawanchaikul and his team’s fieldwork and community interviews across multiple generations have been transformed into a body of work that connects Songkhla’s local history and culture with present-day society. Central to the project is ​one of the artist’s signature works: a large-scale painting​ collating the stories gathered through his unique participatory approach. It blends intergenerational portraits of people, their ​lives and relationships, with important places and historical images of Songkhla. The outcomes also include a feature-length documentary film in which interviews with locals reveal community narratives, oral histories and personal memories. New footage is merged with old footage to reveal what, over the last decade, has changed and what has disappeared.

A tra​velogue by Rawanchaikul will also be published. Narrated in the form of a letter addressed to his daughter – who accompanied him on his first trip to Songkhla in 2016 – it ​ blurs community stories with elements of his personal life and insights into the process of making art. A dialogue between father and daughter, this book features a selection of photographs taken by them both during their visits to Songkhla. The project also includes a series of on-the-ground events and learning activities, such as community tours, folk art performances, workshops and activities that invite people to learn about local ways of life and engage closely with the community.

The exhibition O​.K​. Nakhon - Singora Diary​ 2 ​ will be held at Noparumpa Waterside 35​, a former warehouse ​pier located beside Songkhla ​Lake​ in the heart of old town Songkhla. ​The site has been transformed into a site-specific exhibition complete with a stunning lakefront view. Next door at SAN/Titan Project Space, the exhibition continues with O​.K​. Nakhon: the large hand-painted billboard displayed on the façade of Songkhla’s old Saha cinema during the 2016 exhibition. Featuring members of the community, it is on permanent display alongside the 2016 project’s archives and a music video centred on Songkhla’s old town.

Produced by ​studiOK, the artist’s studio in Chiang Mai, the exhibition includes a collaboration with Good Goods, a Thai lifestyle brand operating under Central Group's Central Tham social enterprise project which has produced commemorative merchandise and will host a pop-up store.

O.K. Nakhon - Singora Diary​ 2​ is one of the main exhibitions in Singorama Art Fest, a contemporary art festival being held in Songkhla's old town. Spanning artist activities and forms of community engagement, including performances, talks and a market featuring local designers and shops, the festival is funded through a Festival Creator 2026 grant from the Creative Economy Agency (Public Organization). Other supporters include the Office of Contemporary Art, Ministry of Culture; Millcon Steel Public Company Limited; and Central Tham by Central Group.

Held at different venues across Songkhla’s old town, Singorama Art Fest will be held between 24-26 July 2026, while O.K. Nakhon - Singora Diary​ 2 will run until 1 November 2026. The festival’s opening event will take place between 4-7pm on Friday 24th July at Noprampha 35 Pier, and include a screening of Rawanchaikul’s O.K. Nakhon - Singora Diary​ 2 film and a performance of Nora, an acrobatic form of dance theatre and improvisational singing from southern Thailand that has been recognised as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.

หนึ่งทศวรรษหลังจากเริ่มต้นโครงการศิลปะชุมชน “นครโอเค ซิงกอร่าเหนือกาลเวลา” ในปี 2559 ศิลปินไทยร่วมสมัยชาวเชียงใหม่ นาวิน ลาวัลย์ชัยกุล กลับมาเยือนชุมชนย่านเมืองเก่าสงขลาอีกครั้ง เพื่อทบทวนความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตนเองกับสถานที่ ผู้คน และประสบการณ์ที่สั่งสมขึ้นตลอดช่วงเวลาที่ผ่านมา

“นครโอเค ซิงกอร่าเหนือกาลเวลา 2” คือการสานต่อเรื่องเล่าจากชุมชน และต่อยอดสู่การสร้างบทสนทนาชุดใหม่ที่ว่าด้วยความทรงจำ อัตลักษณ์ และการเปลี่ยนแปลงของเมือง ผ่านกระบวนการทำงานที่เปิดพื้นที่ให้ผู้คนในชุมชนได้ร่วมแบ่งปันเรื่องเล่าและมุมมอง สะท้อนถึงคุณค่าและความหมายต่อสิ่งที่ยังคงอยู่และสูญหายไป รวมถึงสิ่งใหม่ที่กำลังก่อตัวขึ้นในเมืองท่าเก่าแก่แห่งนี้ จากการลงพื้นที่ของศิลปิน เพื่อสำรวจความเปลี่ยนแปลงและสัมภาษณ์สมาชิกชุมชนหลากหลายรุ่นและต่างอาชีพ เรื่องราวที่บันทึกไว้ถูกนำมาต่อยอดสร้างเป็นผลงานศิลปะร่วมสมัยที่เชื่อมโยงประวัติศาสตร์และวัฒนธรรมท้องถิ่นเข้ากับสังคมปัจจุบัน พร้อมเปิดพื้นที่ให้ผู้ชมร่วมสำรวจชุมชนและจินตนาการถึงอนาคตของเมืองสงขลาไปด้วยกัน

หนึ่งในผลงานสำคัญของโครงการคือ จิตรกรรมชุมชน (Community Portrait) ภาพวาดขนาดใหญ่ที่สร้างจากเรื่องเล่าและข้อมูลที่รวบรวมผ่านการลงพื้นที่และสัมภาษณ์ชุมชน ถ่ายทอดภาพผู้คน วิถีชีวิตและความสัมพันธ์ของผู้คน รวมถึงสถานที่สำคัญและเหตุการณ์ทางประวัติศาสตร์ของสงขลา ด้วยแนวการทำงานที่มุ่งเน้นการมีส่วนร่วมอันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของศิลปินและทีมงานสตูดิโอเค (studiOK) ยังเชื่อมต่อกับเรื่องเล่าของชุมชนที่นำเสนอในรูปแบบภาพยนตร์สัมภาษณ์ชุมชน ผ่านกระบวนการประวัติศาสตร์คำบอกเล่า (Oral History) รวบรวมความทรงจำและมุมมองของผู้คนในเมืองเก่าสงขลา เชื่อมโยงกับฟุตเทจที่เคยบันทึกไว้เมื่อ 10 ปีก่อน เพื่อสะท้อนทั้งความต่อเนื่องและความเปลี่ยนแปลงของเมือง ผู้คน และช่วงเวลาที่ผ่านไป อีกทั้งยังจะมีการจัดพิมพ์หนังสือบันทึกการเดินทางของศิลปิน บอกเล่าเรื่องราวของชุมชนผ่านสายตาศิลปินและกระบวนการทำงานศิลปะที่ผสานเข้ากับชีวิตส่วนตัว ทำหน้าที่เป็นส่วนขยายของนิทรรศการ พร้อมเปิดโอกาสให้ผู้อ่านได้สัมผัสประสบการณ์และสำรวจเรื่องราวได้ด้วยตนเอง นอกเหนือจากการจัดทำสื่อที่หลากหลายแล้ว โครงการยังให้ความสำคัญกับปฏิบัติการศิลปะชุมชนและกิจกรรมส่งเสริมการเรียนรู้ ได้แก่ ทัวร์ชุมชน การแสดงศิลปะพื้นบ้าน เวิร์กช็อป และกิจกรรมสร้างสรรค์ที่เชิญชวนให้ผู้คนได้เรียนรู้วิถีชีวิตในท้องถิ่นและมีส่วนร่วมกับชุมชนอย่างใกล้ชิด

“นครโอเค ซิงกอร่าเหนือกาลเวลา 2” จัดแสดงที่ท่าน้ำนพรัมภา พื้นที่โกดังเก่าและท่าเรือริมทะเลสาบสงขลา ผู้ชมจะได้พบกับผลงานสร้างสรรค์ชุดใหม่ รวมถึงผลงานจิตรกรรมชุมชน “Singora Diary” ที่รวบรวมเรื่องราวของผู้คน สถานที่ และเหตุการณ์สำคัญของเมืองสงขลาต่างยุคสมัย ซึ่งศิลปินพร้อมทีมงานได้บันทึกและทำงานร่วมกับชุมชนไว้เมื่อ 10 ปีก่อน นิทรรศการนี้ยังเชื่อมต่อกับ SAN / Titan Project Space พื้นที่สร้างสรรค์ริมทะเลสาบสงขลาที่นำเสนอผลงาน “นครโอเค ซิงกอร่าเหนือกาลเวลา” ชุดเดิมจากปี 2559 ซึ่งได้รับการอนุรักษ์และจัดแสดงถาวรเพื่อสะท้อนความต่อเนื่องของแนวคิดศิลปะชุมชนและความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างศิลปะร่วมสมัยกับบริบทท้องถิ่น พร้อม กิจกรรมเสวนา การฉายภาพยนตร์ และกิจกรรมสร้างสรรค์ตลอดช่วงเทศกาล

นิทรรศการครั้งนี้ดำเนินการผลิตโดยสตูดิโอเค ทีมศิลปิน และนักออกแบบที่ทำงานร่วมกับนาวิน ลาวัลย์ชัยกุล ในการพัฒนาและสร้างสรรค์ผลงานของโครงการ พร้อมความร่วมมือจาก Good Goods (กุ๊ด กุ๊ดส์) แบรนด์ไลฟ์สไตล์ของไทยดำเนินการภายใต้โครงการ "เซ็นทรัล ทำ" วิสาหกิจเพื่อสังคมของกลุ่มเซ็นทรัล ในการผลิตสินค้าที่ระลึกและจัด Pop-up Store ภายในนิทรรศการครั้งนี้ด้วย

“นครโอเค ซิงกอร่าเหนือกาลเวลา 2” สร้างสรรค์โดยสตูดิโอเค ด้วยการสนับสนุนจากสำนักงานศิลปวัฒนธรรมร่วมสมัย กระทรวงวัฒนธรรม นับเป็นหนึ่งในนิทรรศการหลักของเทศกาล Singorama Art Fest (ซิงกอรามา อาร์ต เฟส) เทศกาลร่วมสมัยที่จัดขึ้นในย่านเมืองเก่าสงขลา ภายใต้โครงการ Festival Creator 2026 ของสำนักงานส่งเสริมเศรษฐกิจสร้างสรรค์ (องค์การมหาชน) โดยมีเป้าหมายมุ่งพัฒนาศักยภาพผู้จัดงานและยกระดับเทศกาลสร้างสรรค์ในท้องถิ่น

Dear the Deity of Mount. Rokko ——

This is a gift of stories —
lives that have quietly bloomed
beneath your timeless gaze,
in the city of Kobe.

The Japanese who once sailed toward South America,
their chests filled with the scent of hope.
The Jewish families who fled from Lithuania
and found refuge across the ocean.
The Indian pearl seekers are drawn by the whisper of the tide.
The Muslims who have gathered in Japan’s very first mosque.
The Vietnamese who have supported shoemaking.
The Chinese who kept the heartbeat of jazz alive.

Here in Kobe, always —
the old and the new,

"KOBEWALA"
A community art project by Navin Rawanchaikul
in collaboration with the international community of Kobe

“Kobewala” is the latest project by the Thai artist Navin Rawanchaikul, specially created for the 2025 edition of Rokko Meets Art, an outdoor art festival held annually on Rokko mountain in the city of Kobe, Japan. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Rawanchaikul’s studio, Navin Production, this new work – rooted in the community engagement that is integral to his practice – also marks his first collaboration with his daughter.

Throughout the Indian subcontinent, the suffix “-wala” refers to a person involved in some kind of activity, such as a ‘chaiwala’ (a person who sells tea), a ‘dabbawala’ (a lunchbox delivery person) or a ‘rickshawwala’ (a rickshaw driver). The term is also used to name a place after an ethnic group, such as Gujranwala, which is a city in the Pakistani province of Punjab – the hometown of the artist’s family before the partition of India. Combining this suffix and Kobe, “Kobewala” is a response to the artist’s personal roots as well as the city’s multicultural life as one of the major ports in Japan. While diaspora communities from India and South Asian countries are the project’s focal point, the artist has expanded his scope to cover other ethnic groups found in Kobe, including its Brazilian, Vietnamese and Jewish communities. On the other hand, “Kobewala” also explores the journeys of Japanese people who, according to historical record, departed from the port of Kobe to live in other places.

Centred around one of Navin Production’s signature painted billboards, this multifaceted project also includes a documentary film that traces the artist and his daughter’s journey to Kobe, during which they sought out the stories of people and communities across its history. The film is accompanied by a narration, the script of which is based on a letter the artist addressed to the ‘Rokko Mountain Deities’ and is voiced by some of the people featured in the story. Over its one-hour duration, the artist links, through a process of self-reflection, his own experiences to the lives of those he meets. Presented at the observation area on Rokko mountain – which offers a stunning view of Kobe – “Kobewala” will also include an activity area where visitors are invited to create their own ‘-wala’ flags and share their stories. In addition, a unique blend of Chai tea created by the artist’s daughter, Mari Rawanchaikul, will be released with the support by Kobe Spice. This aromatic spiced drink is a symbol of their mixed heritage and Kobe’s multiculturalism.

The launch of the project, due to be held on August 24 from 4pm onwards, will include a community workshop, followed by a film screening and a conversation between the artist and his collaborators.

ナウィン・ラワンチャイクンと神戸の多文化コミュニティが共に創り上げたコミュニティ・アートプロジェクト

「神戸ワーラー」は、タイ人アーティスト、ナウィン・ラワンチャイクンによる最新プロジェクトです。神戸・六甲山で毎年開催される野外アートフェスティバル「六甲ミーツ・アート芸術散歩 2025」への出展作品として、特別に制作されました。
ナウィンのスタジオ「Navin Production（ナウィン・プロダクション）」の設立30周年を記念して発表されるこの作品は、彼が創作活動の中で大切にしてきた「コミュニティとの関わり」に根ざしています。さらに今回は、ナウィンの娘との初の共同制作でもあります。
インドやその周辺地域では、「〇〇ワーラー」という言葉を名詞の語尾につけることで、特定の仕事や役割を担う人を表します。たとえば「チャイワーラー」はお茶売り、「ダッバーワーラー」は弁当配達人、「リクシャーワーラー」はリクシャーの運転手です。また、「ワーラー」は地名にも使われます。たとえば、パキスタンのパンジャーブ州にある「グジャランワーラー」は、ナウィンの家族がインド分離独立以前に暮らしていた場所でもあります。
「神戸ワーラー」という言葉には、アーティスト自身のルーツと、日本有数の港町として多文化が共生する神戸とのつながりが込められています。本プロジェクトは、インドや南アジアから神戸に移住してきた人々のコミュニティに焦点を当てながらも、ブラジル系、ベトナム系、ユダヤ系など、神戸に暮らすさまざまな背景を持つ人々にも目を向けています。さらに、「神戸ワーラー」は、かつて神戸港から世界へと旅立っていった日本人の存在にも言及しています。これは、歴史的な記録にも残されている通りです。
本作は、ナウィン・プロダクションの代表的な表現手法である大型ビルボード（看板）を中心に展開されます。そこに、アーティストとその娘が神戸を訪ね、人々やコミュニティの物語を探した旅を記録したドキュメンタリー映像も加わります。
映像では、「六甲山の神さま」への手紙をもとにしたナレーションが、市民の声によって語られます。55分間にわたるこの映像の中で、ナウィンは自身の経験を振り返りながら、出会った人々の人生と重ね合わせていきます。
神戸の美しい景色を一望できる六甲山の展望エリアで開催されるこの「神戸ワーラー」では、来場者が自分だけの「ワーラーの旗」を作り、それぞれの物語を共有できるワークショップのためのアクティビティエリアも設けられます。さらに、アーティストの娘であるラワンチャイクン茉莉が、神戸スパイスのサポートを受け特別にブレンドしたユニークなチャイティー「神戸ワーラーチャイ」もお披露目されます。スパイスの香り高いこの神戸ワーラーチャイは、アーティストの多様なルーツと神戸の多文化性を象徴しています。

なお、このプロジェクトのオープニングイベントは、8月24日午後4時から開催され、映像作品の上映とワークショップ、アーティストとそのコラボレーターによる対話が行われます。
