Blackwater Spotlight | Myanmar 25 April - 3 May, 2026

Blackwater diving in Myanmar waters — and the water column delivered something strange on every single descent. 🔦🌊

This week's Blackwater Spotlight goes deep into the dark waters off Myanmar, where Franck's lens caught what most divers never get to see. Larval fish mid-transformation. Tiny pelagic predators hunting in open water. Creatures so bizarre they barely look real — and every single one of them perfectly designed for a life spent drifting in the deep. The highlight was probably this very pretty squid!!!

This is what happens when you stop diving the reef and drop into the dark instead. The ocean has a whole other side — and it only comes out at night.

Blackwater Spotlight | The Paper Nautilus

Blackwater diving in the Andaman Sea and something drifted past the torch that stopped us completely. 🖤🌊

We first encountered a Paper Nautilus in 2017 — dark water, somewhere beneath the boat, and this impossibly delicate creature carrying what looked like a ghost of a shell. We've been obsessed ever since.

Here's what makes this animal one of the strangest and most beautiful pelagic cephalopods in the ocean — it isn't even a nautilus. It's an octopus. And the deeper you look, the weirder it gets.

Blackwater Spotlight | Name That Creature

Blackwater diving in the Andaman Sea serves up creatures that look like they were designed by someone who'd never seen an ocean. 🌊🔦

Larval fish that look like floating glass ornaments. Cephalopods that seem to be wearing a costume. Zooplankton with appendages that have absolutely no business existing. We've been on enough blackwater dives to know that the deep water column doesn't follow normal rules — and we've finally decided to name these things accordingly.

Night diving in the Andaman Sea and we swapped the water column for the reef — and the blacktip reef sharks showed up in numbers. 🦈🌊

📍 North Andaman | 7–14 April 2026

This week's Blackwater Spotlight takes a detour. Instead of heading into open water, we stayed close to the reef after dark — and what we found was one of those dive sessions you don't forget quickly. Blacktip reef sharks circling in the torchlight, completely at home in the dark, moving through the Andaman Sea like they own it. Because they do.

This is what the ocean looks like at night when you stop diving past it and actually stop to watch.
