We are celebrating the first anniversary of our dojo in Bangkok!

In October 2023, Otake Nobutoshi sent Shihandai Malte Stokhof to establish our dojo and present us a scroll with the name of our dojo hand-calligraphed by Pascal Krieger: Shobukan Dojo. We are an official shibu of Shinbukan Dojo, founded by Otake Risuke, Shihan of Tenshinshō-den Katori Shintō-ryū, and now led by Shihan Otake Nobutoshi after his father's death in 2021.

It is an honor to be teaching and safeguarding this sacred tradition. We are fully committed to continue our mission here to foster a good community of Tenshinshō-den Katori Shintō-ryū practitioners. Our school received the first ever "Intangible Cultural Asset" designation given to a martial art by the Japanese government in 1960, and as the only authorised shibu of Shinbukan Dojo in Thailand, we will strive to uphold the traditions and teachings passed down to us in unbroken lineage since the founding of the school in the 15th Century.

เมื่อเดือนตุลาคมปี 2566 โอทาเกะ โนบุโตชิ ได้ส่งชิฮันได มัลเต สต็อคฮอฟ มาจัดตั้งโดโจของเรา และมอบม้วนกระดาษที่เขียนชื่อโดโจโดย ปาสคาล ครีเจอร์: โชบุคัน โดโจ เราเป็นสาขาอย่างเป็นทางการของ ชินบุคัน โดโจ ก่อตั้งโดย โอทาเกะ ริสุเกะ ชิฮัน ของ เท็นชินโชเด็น คะโตริ ชินโตริว ซึ่งปัจจุบันนำโดยชิฮัน โอทาเกะ โนบุโตชิ หลังจากการเสียชีวิตของบิดาเมื่อปี 2564

"In iaijutsu, particular importance is placed on reihō (etiquette). Katori Shintō-ryū was never solely the domain of the warrior class, and has always permitted farmers and common townspeople to study the tradition upon the completion of the keppan. People from all classes commenced their study by learning reihō. There are times in practice where students are prone to becoming violent or losing their composure. Maintaining an attitude of courtesy toward one's partner encourages calmness without resorting to coarse or violent behaviour. Carelessness in the handling of one's sword can lead to injury during practice, and never is this truer than in iaijutsu. Reiho is thus strictly adhered to in order to place oneself in the correct mindset to prevent these kinds of occurrences."

"คำว่า "เคน" (見) ในภาษาญี่ปุ่นหมายถึงการมองด้วยตาเปล่า ในสภาพนี้เมื่อภาพเข้าสู่เลนส์ของตา จิตใจจะโฟกัสและเริ่มประมวลผล อย่างไรก็ตามการ "มอง" ในรูปแบบนี้มีความเสี่ยงต่อความผิดพลาดในการประมวลผลภาพที่เข้าสู่ตา

"The Japanese word ken (見)refers to seeing with the naked eye. In this state, as images enter the lens of the eye, the mind focuses on them and begins to process them. This form of "seeing," however, is susceptible to errors in the processing of images as they enter the eyes.
The word kan (観) in contrast, refers to seeing the true nature of things with the mind's eye, a state called shingan. Shingan refers to the mind's awareness and analysis of all phenomena in the immediate environment. As an example of these two states, as you observe (ken) the maai (spacing) between yourself and your opponent, a mind in a state of shingan allows you to sense (kan) what is behind you, where and at what levels your feet are placed, or from which direction the sun, moon, or lamps are shining, so you can position yourself with your back to them.
As everyone knows, having natural light shining directly into your face makes any chore difficult, and this is also the case in combat. A master swordsman is thus one who can simultaneously process multiple phenomena in the environment using shingan, while remaining unattached to any of these details. To hear the soundless and see the formless is the flowering of shingan within, and this state is attainable by anyone willing to invest in the necessary training."

“OLD SWORD (KOTO) PERIOD (900 to 1530)

With the disintegration of the peaceful civil administration under the Fujiwara clan in the latter half of the Heian period, there arose the new samurai class. Power was obtained only by means of warfare. Since wars for power were numerous, the samurai adopted the sword for combat. The leaders made full use of their warriors on horse- back at the battlefronts. Thus, swords that had a cutting edge of four feet or more were often employed.
The predominant weapons used were bows and arrows, naginata (a kind of halberd), and swords. The sword became an everyday weapon and was carried constantly. The straight sword that was employed prior to this period, principally for stabbing, was replaced by a single-bladed sword with curvature. The transition from the old straight style into the standard samurai-sword style, however, took a long time. There are few swords that were made during the transitory period still in existence today.”

"PERIODS IN THE HISTORY OF THE SAMURAI SWORD
ANCIENT SWORD (CHOKUTO OR KEN) PERIOD (until A.D. 900). These swords were made chiefly by smiths from China or Korea or by the early Japanese smiths. Although they were made of steel, the tempering was faulty. They were mostly of the straight (chokuto) type. The centers of the sword making profession were in Yamato, Mutsu, Sword and San-in. Although these swords were made in Japan, they were mere imitations of Chinese blades. Highranking officers usually carried expensive swords made in China. This imitation of the Chinese sword was gradually developed into the typical samurai sword."

“Among the different paths involving disciplined training, the particularly dangerous nature of budo requires unwavering vigilance in the course of training.
Those who choose the path of budo must remain mindful that to approach training with a malevolent heart is destructive, a mindset known in kenjutsu as satsujinken (the murderous sword). Examples of swordsmen of old whose paths led to misfortune merely because they lacked upright characters are not as rare as one might think. But if we always approach training with a pure heart, conflicts can be faced with the confidence needed to quell hostilities and find peaceful solutions, an attitude known as katsujinken (the life-giving sword).
Bushido, the way of the warrior, is a life lived to the very end without swerving from the sacred path of integrity and sincerity. In other words, bushido imbues one with a spirit of self-sacrifice. This spirit enables us to give our lives without regret for the sake of those who appreciate our worth as human beings. The beautiful phrase, "A samurai will gladly lay down his life for those who truly understand him," exemplifies this moving sentiment.
Thus, bushido inspires people to act with sincerity and approach those of higher standing with respect and those below with love. Regardless of how low a person's standing may be, the same affection and sensitivity that is shown to superiors should also be shown to those who recognize one's true worth. It is within this relationship that fresh life is given to our innate human capacity for a loving-kindness that transcends the bounds of class differences.”

"คาตะ (Kata) ต้องใช้เวลาในการจำ นักเรียนพยายามจำเพื่อที่สั่งการความเคลื่อนไหว แต่ร่างกายก็จะเรียนรู้รูปแบบการฝึกเป็นประจำในเระยะเวลาสองหรือสามปี ถ้ารวมเป็นหนึ่งได้ ผู้ฝึกฝนจะสามารถทำคาตะ (Kata) ทั้งสี่ถูกต้องโดยไม่ต้องมีสติ ถึงขนาดที่สามารถคิดถึงงานของตนเองในวันถัดไปขณะฝึกฝน นักเรียนที่มาถึงขั้นนี้ได้ควรสามารถหลีกเลี่ยงและโต้กลับกับสิ่งที่ไม่คาดคิดตามสัญชาตญาณในรูปแบบเดียวกัน

“The forms naturally take time to memorise. The student initially struggles merely to remember the order of movements, but the body naturally comes to absorb the forms with two or three years of repetitive practice. Once embodied, the adept is able to complete the four forms correctly without consciously thinking about them even to the extent he can think about his work the following day while performing them. By the time the student reaches this stage, he should be able to avoid and counter-attack unexpected cuts to the head or torso instinctively in the same manner as the forms…
…Learning one new kata after another before one has thoroughly learnt what they have already been taught leaves the student unable to make the techniques their own. When I was studying under Hayashi-sensei, I simply continued to practise what I had learnt by focusing on thoroughly working on what I had been taught until my teacher told me he would teach me the next technique, and never requested he teach me the next technique myself.
It was due to this approach that Hayashi-sensei passed everything transmitted in our tradition to me. I would like not only my own students, but people in general today, to learn the importance of patiently and diligently engaging in one endeavour.”

“Katori Shintō-ryū transmits inner teachings regarding long weapons including the bo, naginata and yari with techniques in which the bō is pitted versus the bo, naginata versus naginata, and yari versus yari. However, unless both parties are experienced practitioners with long weapons, this practice can be dangerous and also takes up training space, so we practise against these weapons with swords. Practice with the sword against these long weapons trains the practitioner in Katori Shintō-ryū technique "hashikakaru" (bridging), and is a key area of study. Techniques within our tradition are comprised to allow the practitioner to deal with any form of weaponry that they may encounter on the battlefield. A saying transmitted in Katori Shintō-ryū regarding facing longer weapons says "When facing polearms, bridge in to immediately achieve victory".
The longer the weapon, the greater distance from which one can attack an opponent. Thus, long weapons are normally assumed to be advantageous. A practitioner with many years of training, however, can using bridging tactics to respond to long weapons with surprising ease.”

The exercise of this concept is only possible in conjunction with that of the concept of Kiai. It consists of delivering the energy (Ki), the weapon (Ken) and the body (Tai) at a given point, at the very moment these three components simultaneously reach their apogee. This trilogy-called Ki-Ken-Tai- cannot be dissociated.
The Kime is expressed through a short check of the last two elements (Ken-Tai) while the first element (Ki) follows its path through the opponent's body and soul. Should one of the elements be slightly deficient, then Kime will not be achieved and the lack of coordination will result in a marked decrease in the efficiency of one's blow.
The deep meaning of Kime includes a notion of finality. Each Kime clearly indicates that the attack was successful and can thus put an end to the engagement. One can therefore rightly consider that any given Kata may terminate with the first Kime. This state of mind should be ever-present during each Kime.
Here are three important consequences of the application of the Kime:
1. The Kime allows an excellent control of all the tech- niques, as well as a surprising accuracy.
2. During the Kime, the short instant of immobility infers that the Shugyosha is in perfect balance and that he is mentally ready to adapt himself to any other technique under any circumstances.
3. When the concept of Kime is properly mastered, the Shugyosha carrying out a very fast sequence is capable of coming to a complete stop at any point of Kime without anticipating the next technique.”

The Kiai may have two effects: one physical and one psychological.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐢𝐚𝐢 is to solicit the abdominal part of the body by forcibly exhaling air. This abdominal part is the link between the two most important muscular parts of the body: the thighs and the back. By contracting the abdominal region, the Kiai permits a concerted action of the whole body on a given point with a maximum of perfectly controlled energy.
The Kiai is tiring because it obliges the trainee to give himself totally each time, but the regular production of the Kiai will make him aware of the origin of his energy and will progressively improve his use of it.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐢𝐚𝐢 is not as fanciful as some lore or films would have us believe. On the contrary, a well trained individual will not so much as blink at the sound of a Kiai, unless it is delivered with unusual intensity and resonance. However, it is clear that Kiai is a useful teaching tool for a beginner. While it strongly underlines the intensity of the work, an unexpected Kiai can also be a test of a student's concentration, or can simply shake him out of his lethargy. The Kiai also has a psychological effect on the person who emits it. It will "give him heart" when he faces formidable opponent.
