Another heartbreaking event occurred last week. 🕊️🙏🏻 I won't be diving into the topic of active shooter situations, as many have already discussed it extensively. However, I want to highlight the risk of becoming a victim of crime—a danger many might feel is far removed from their daily lives.
Let’s take a look at global statistics gathered by the UNODC. Between 2019 and 2021, an average of 440,000 people worldwide lost their lives to crime every year. That’s roughly 52 people every single hour—far exceeding the death toll from national conflicts and wars (around 200,000 per year). Some might argue, "Well, 22% of those were tied to organized crime and gangs." True, but the remaining 78% is still a staggering number.
To be completely honest, looking at these numbers made even me realize that becoming 1 of those 440,000 is not as distant of a possibility as we'd like to think.
Even in today’s modern, advanced, and civilized world, being prepared for life's uncertainties remains absolutely vital. This means learning situational awareness, maintaining mindfulness, avoiding conflict, and attempting to resolve problems with gentleness. And when we’ve done everything to avoid and prevent danger, yet it still reaches our doorstep—we must be able to address that threat with decisive action.
All of these skills can be cultivated through martial arts, especially in Aikido.
