Practice the aiki Jo to establish a strong central axis, a strongly felt extension, and correct footwork.
Then transfer this learning into taijutsu since many Jo movements directly mirror empty handed technique.
The Jo is dynamic and intuitive. Through its length, we deflect, sweep, and parry. Decisively, we can also use it like a sword (strike or a thrust).
Through its length, the Jo can be used like a technical lever. The forward hand acts like a fulcrum while the back side (yin) of the body asserts a quiet control in the movement. We observe how distance will maximize output.
Our judgement of effective space becomes refined.
Since we do not project or throw along the shaft of the Jo, we also learn the difficult skill of correctly and fully blending. We harmonize our body projecting along the length and tip of the Jo. When we sense the ‘sweet spot’, we concentrate our power precisely and exactly through one point (the tip of the Jo).
Our sense of acuity is refined.
The jo helps us view trajectory. Since it magnifies small body movements, we can clearly visualize and understand the results of created circles/spirals. We can also observe how they originate from our center and how coordinated, whole body movement increases potential.
This hones in our sense of curving, circling, looping, coiling, spiraling.
With the Jo, we can practice a relaxed continuous flow with extension. The Jo will round out movement, with space, rhythm, and a timing. As we practice flowing and fluid movement empty handed, we come to understand (keeping the Jo in mind) how a relaxed round movement can arrest the intent of the attacking line.
This binds in our focused but relaxed body and mind, intention and resolve.
The Jo helps us create an awareness of how to blend fully along with the whole length of our body. Empty handed, we hold an integrity (Jo in mind and body) to naturally keep us extended and aligned. We sense the effects of the relation from our center, hips, and hands, and from the tip of the Jo into the solid anchored back foot (heel).
We enhance our integrity having confidence in our solidity.
Practice the dynamic of the Jo and apply these teachings directly to taijutsu.
The Jo magnifies our understanding into empty-handed techniques by physically reinforcing the exterior structure while also refining interiorly felt sensation.
