South Sudan’s national basketball team, the Bright Stars, have officially landed in Madrid, Spain, as preparations heat up for the FIBA Men’s AfroBasket 2025, taking place from August 12–24 in Angola! 🏀🔥

Among those already in camp are key stars like Wenyen Gabriel, Carlik Jones, Nuni Omot, JT Thor, and many others — bringing serious energy and championship mindset to the squad. 💪🏿

Although Khaman Maluach and Marial Shayok haven’t joined the camp yet, excitement is already building across the nation as we gear up for a historic run!

In 1999, when Luol Deng [the current president of South Sudan Basketball Federation] joined Blair Academy, he had no shoes to play basketball, Royal Ivey [the current South Sudan Basketball Coach] offered him basketball sneakers and they both start training together. When Luol holiday comes and Luol couldn’t afford to fly back home, Royal Ivey would let Luol stay with him. Both became successful in Basketball with great fortunes and they both retires.

In 2019, Luol was appointed the SSBF president. When a call of duty knocked at Luol’s door. He remembered Royal Ivey not only as a friend but someone who he trust could walk the challenging step with him. They both brought in their High school Coach who mentored them to assist them in the work they were doing.

Being people with common goal and interest, they helped build south Sudan basketball team from the scratch. Through their teamwork, they helped the team catapult to world arena in Afrobasketball, FIBA World Cup and now going for Sunmer Olympic Games in Paris next year. This couldn’t have been achievable without the trios.

Takeaway from Luol & Royal story….

How many people have helped their friends without expecting anything from them?

Nowadays friends see opportunities and because of their selfishness and seeing their friends as competitors, they refuse to call in friends to try their luck. Many people have connections but only wants to be the only terminal connected to that power source.
This world is full of uncertainties, tables may turn and a friend you look down today might definitely be the trailblazer tomorrow. Do not try to disconnect yourself when the ball is on your pitch today because it won’t stay their forever. A friend you helps build today can rekindle your candle when the wind blows it off. Learn to give back and it will come back to you unexpected in different form.

There is nothing as more special than friends winning together...

1. Manute Bol 7'7 - In the NBA 1985-1995 - selected 31st by the Washington Bullets in the 1985 NBA draft, the bullets are now called the Wizards, during his career he also played for Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat, played 624 NBA games.

2.. Luol Deng 6'9 - In the NBA 2004 - 2019 - selected with the 7th pick by Phoenix Suns in the 2004 NBA draft, the draft rights went to the Chicago Bulls because of a trade, during his career he also played for Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, LA Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves, played 902 games

3. Deng G*i 6'9 - undrafted in the 2005 NBA draft, signed in August 2005 by Philadelphia 76ers, played 2 NBA games for them and was waived in December 2005, he went to play in Europe, is currently retired.

4. Mac Koshwal 6'10- Undrafted in the 2010 NBA draft, Played with the Detroit Pistons in the 2010 Summer League, signed with Philadelphia 76ers in Sep 2013, played 3 NBA preseason games, waived in October 2013, has been playing in the G-League in the last few years.

6. Ater Majok 6'11 - Selected 58th by the LA Lakers in the 2011 NBA draft, was sent to play in Europe, played 3 summer league games for the Lakers in 2012, recently played in Lebanon and Tunisia.

6. Thon Maker 7'1 - In the NBA 2016-2021, selected 10th in the 2016 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, also played for the Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers, played 263 NBA games, is currently playing for a professional team in Israel.

7. Mangok Mathiang 6'10 - undrafted in the 2017 NBA draft, signed a two way contract in August 2017 with the Charlotte Hornets, played 4 NBA games with the Hornets, played with Greensboro Swarm in the G-League, is currently signed to a team in Slovenia, Europe.

8. Peter Jok 6'6 - Undrafted in the 2017 NBA
