MARCAD Plus Communication Officer, Kodou Sene, participated in the 2026 DELTAS Africa Science Communication Workshop, organized by the Science for Africa Foundation in collaboration with the University of Cape Town.

The meeting brought together communications leads from the 14 consortia supported by DELTAS Africa II.

Held from 18–20 May 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa, the workshop aimed to position science communication as a core
programmatic and investment pillar that contributes to programme impact, funder confidence, and the long-term sustainability of DELTAS Africa.

MARCAD Plus Postdoctoral fellow, Dr Fatimata Bintou Sall conducted a survey on the coverage of intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) among pregnant women to assess the effectiveness of a community-based strategy implemented in the health districts of Kédougou.

“The survey lasted one week and covered the health districts of Kédougou and the district of Saraya, which served as the control district. The community-based strategy was co‑designed with all stakeholders during a co‑creation workshop, then implemented within the catchment areas of six health posts in the Kédougou health district.” Dr Fatimata Bintou Sall

New research led by Ndey fatou Drammeh , a PhD student LSHTM and MARCAD Plus PhD fellow, shows malaria drug resistance isn’t driven by a single mutation, but a complex combination of genetic changes that help parasites with legacy mutations survive newer treatments.

As part of World Malaria Day, Dr. Oumou Kalsom Gueye, a MARCAD Plus postdoctoral fellow, organised an open day for students from Cosmopolitan Bilingual School, an immersive scientific experience designed to inspire the next generation. The MARCAD-Plus and LEVP teams welcomed the students to Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar ( UCAD), offering them a unique opportunity to explore the world of malaria research up close.

"We had the pleasure of welcoming primary school students to UCAD for an educational visit at the heart of scientific research.

At the LEVP (Laboratory of Vector and Parasite Ecology) of the Faculty of Science and Technology, they discovered the insectarium and the life cycle of Anopheles mosquitoes, as well as the methods used to assess their susceptibility to insecticides.

The visit continued at the Parasitology Department of the Faculty of Medicine, where they were introduced to malaria diagnostic techniques, including rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and thick blood smears.

The students then visited the MARCAD Plus office and had the honour of meeting its director, Professor Omar Gaye.

Curious and engaged, they asked many relevant questions, demonstrating a genuine interest in science.

This initiative aims to raise young people’s awareness of malaria-related challenges, highlight the role of research, and inspire future scientific vocations." Dr Oumou Kalsom Gueye

At the University of Kisangani, hashtag PhD fellow, Dieu Merci Mbumba Lupaka facilitated the initiation of third-year undergraduate students (Bac+3) into practical work focused on scientific research.

This activity aimed to introduce students to the fundamentals of research methodology, including the formulation of research questions, basic study design, and the importance of scientific rigor.

It also provided an opportunity to mentor students and stimulate early interest in research within the faculty.

The session was well received, with active student participation, reflecting their enthusiasm and growing interest in scientific inquiry.
