After successfully completing his mandatory one-year term as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Julius Maada Bio has officially handed over the leadership of the regional bloc to Senegal's President, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye.

A new chapter has begun for West Africa as Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The decision was reached during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority held in Lungi, Sierra Leone, where President Faye officially succeeded President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone.

As the new ECOWAS Chairman, President Faye is expected to lead the regional bloc in promoting peace, security, democratic governance, economic integration, and stronger cooperation among West African nations.

Congratulations to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on his new leadership role, and best wishes as ECOWAS continues working towards a more united and prosperous West Africa.

The United States Embassy in Freetown has announced that it will discontinue routine visa processing services in Sierra Leone effective 1 August 2026 as part of a broader realignment of US visa operations across Africa.

Under the new arrangement, Sierra Leoneans applying for US visas will be required to complete their applications, pay the required fees, and attend visa interviews at designated regional processing centres in Monrovia (Liberia), Accra (Ghana), or Dakar (Senegal).

The decision follows US Presidential Proclamation 10998, which shifts routine nonimmigrant and immigrant visa services—including tourist, business, student, family, and diversity visas—to selected regional hubs across Africa.

President Adama Barrow has arrived in Lungi, Sierra Leone, ahead of the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit scheduled for Sunday, 19 July 2026.

The Government of The Gambia has officially launched the National Identity Management System (NIMS), marking a significant step toward building a trusted and sovereign Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

The new system introduces instant issuance of the GAM ID, replacing the previous slow and bureaucratic process with real-time service delivery.

Citizens will now be able to receive and activate their national ID immediately after biometric enrolment, making identity services faster, more efficient, and more accessible.
