Crit lean… story of the shot 👇

With five weeks to go before the 2024 Tour, photographer explains why he chose to include this image as one of his favourite selects in our print sale.

“This was stage two of the men’s race and so our first laps around Lunsar with the men. I’m always in awe at how many people turn out to watch. This is the final corner of the lap and from here up the gentle incline to the finish line, the crowd is practically three deep the entire way. I also like the mixture of jerseys and equipment which make this race so unique. In the middle of the shot is from . A seasoned crit rider, you can see his cornering technique is more advanced than the others, however, by the final day of the Tour, practically the entire peloton were cornering like seasoned criterium competitors. To me, this shows the value of competition against more and differently experienced riders. This was a two-way learning experience as later on in the stage when Jack was in the breakaway, he was dropped because he couldn’t handle the 40°C heat that the Sierra Leonean riders are well used to. More water bags for Jack the next day.”

Bubu… 🎺 story of the shot 👇

Beyond the racing, the Tour de Lunsar is a festival. A celebration. A tapestry of sounds and colour. No image sums this up better than this portrait of a musician performing on the morning of the race. Photographer tells us more.

“I think it’s personal, the music they play - bubu music. It’s from the Temne tribe that I’m from. I believe so much of our oral tradition has been lost through the years and it’s interesting to connect with the bubu sounds, especially with a growing sport at that part of the country. It’s more or less like there’s a goal to get somewhere everyday, but the athletes are reminded of who we are at the start of a race through the music.”

From west Africa to Watopia! Join us for the final week of Zwift's Black Celebration Series, with a scripted workout that tells a little bit of the story of cycling in Sierra Leone. We'll be joining the events at 4pm Freetown time (GMT+0) on Tuesday 27 and Thursday 29, so keep an eye out for us in the peloton.

By now you might have heard the news. We are doing an emergency crowdfund for the 2024 , to make up the shortfall after a major sponsor backed out.

You can find the link in our bio. We've been blown away by how generous cycling fans from around the world have been so far, but we still have a long way to reach the target.

We'll have a couple of other irons in the fire, so stay tune. Meantime, enjoy ' photos as a reminder of exactly what makes this race so special.

Introducing the EF Kono Criterium!

We've been proud to associate with since 2021 when donated a couple of bags of his kit to support the team.

Now, we're delighted to be racing in the inaugural EF Kono Criterium this coming Sunday. The criterium will take place in the town of Koidu, and is the third round of the , which gives riders in Sierra Leone increased opportunities to compete and improve their skills.

We're proud but also a little sad to be saying a temporary goodbye to Kadie Kamara, one of our longest-serving women riders. Kadie is headed for Liberia for university, but we hope she'll be back soon for the !

London, we want your old road bike!

If you're a long-time supporter of Lunsar Cycling, you're well aware of the struggles we have with getting good equipment. The good news is that until the end of January we have a rare opportunity to ship road bikes to Sierra Leone 🇸🇱from London for free. All you need to do is drop the bike off at a central London location – 22 Bishopsgate – and we'll handle the rest.

We're excited to announce a brand new criterium race in Lunsar, open to cyclists across Sierra Leone! 🇸🇱

The race will happen on 26 November, with equal prize money for men and women, plus a junior race for riders under 20 years of age.

It's the first round of a new national criterium series, , which will bring more bike racing to Sierra Leone, in towns and cities around the country.
