*Justice for the Nyande Family: A Call to Action Against State Crimes in Sierra Leone*
Rev. Peter Nyande, a respected member of our community in Bunumbu Peje West Chiefdom, Kailahun District, recently faced a devastating event on the 24th of February 2025, when his house was burnt down and destroyed by members of a secret society. This act of violence, which appears to have been ordered by the paramount chief along with his lower chiefs and elders, raises serious concerns about justice and the rule of law in our beloved Sierra Leone.
It is essential to emphasize that Rev. Nyande has committed no wrongdoing against this society. Even if someone living in his house had offended the society, proper protocol should have been followed, including informing him of the alleged offense. Instead, the destruction was carried out without due process, leading to the loss of not only his property but also important documents and financial resources that do not belong to the accused. Such actions are not just personal grievances; they reflect a broader issue of state crime that undermines the rights and safety of citizens.
This incident is a stark reminder of the need for justice and accountability in our society. Allowing such acts of violence to go unchecked sends a dangerous message that individuals can take the law into their own hands without fear of repercussions. It is imperative that the government and the authorities investigate this matter thoroughly, ensuring that those responsible for this heinous act are held accountable. The Nyande family should not be subjected to such blind destruction and persecution, and it is the duty of the state to protect its citizens.
I call upon the President of Sierra Leone and the relevant authorities to take immediate action. It is time to restore faith in our legal system and demonstrate that justice will prevail.
