THE COMMISION FOR THE VISION OF RAM

One day, at Ugarchand Shet's (Ramdas) dined with his several friends. After meals, when he was sitting in the drawing room of his palatial house, the Shet said in a mock-serious mood:

"Swami, I am a businessman, a commission agent in trade, and I am very wealthy. I promise you a decent commission, if you would show me Ram, whom I am so eager to see."

"Well," replied Ramdas, "Ramdas can show you Ram, provided you present him with the kind of commission he demands. He does not want your wealth. Assure him that you would hand over the thing he wants from you, and you shall see
Ram in all His magnificence."

"What is it that you want?" he inquired with great eagerness.

"Do you promise before Ramdas tells you what it is?"
Ramdas asked.

He thought for a while and said: "I cannot promise. Kindly tell me what is the commission you demand and I shall see if I am in a position to grant it."

Ramdas was about to drop the matter, but the Shet insisted on Ramdas' speaking out about the commission. At last Ramdas enlightened him.

"What Ramdas wants from you in exchange for the vision of God is your mind. Surrender it up to Ramdas totally, and you will see God face to face."

"Oh!" he exclaimed, throwing up his hands: "I cannot do that."

"Right," Ramdas replied, "you wish to retain the mind for owning this house, your vast riches, property and relations as yours and undergo anxiety, cares and worries concerning them all. Please yourself. The truth is, unless we give over our mind entirely to the thought of God and lay everything that you cling to as belonging to you at His feet, you cannot have Him. In short, complete and unqualified surrender to God alone entitles you to His grace and darshan."

"Once the Light within the body has been sufficiently cultivated—often requiring three to four months after a full Kundalini awakening—a subtle but unmistakable shift begins to occur. At the top back of the head, a pressure forms, like a hidden valve preparing to open. This point is the Bindu Chakra, located precisely where Brahmins traditionally grow their tuft of hair. In Sanskrit, Bindu means “point” or “dot,” but its function is far more profound: it is the access-point of liberation, the threshold through which individual consciousness dissolves into Shoonya—the infinite Void. Yet this gateway does not open easily. It demands that the Sahasrara, the Thousand-Petalled Lotus, be fully awakened, that Kundalini be stabilized in the brain, and that the inner system be purified—especially if the awakening came unexpectedly, without karmic preparation.

The Bindu is more accurately known as Bindu Visarga, meaning “the falling of the drop.” This poetic phrase refers to the descent of Amrita, the sacred nectar described in Ta**ra as the “Nectar of Immortality.” Though it originates in Sahasrara, it enters the body through the Bindu, nourishing the Body of Light from within. Across traditions, this essence appears under many names—Ambrosia, the Elixir of Life, the Food of the Gods—but its role remains consistent: it sustains higher consciousness, prolongs vitality, and facilitates transcendence. When this nectar begins to flow, it is not metaphorical—it is experienced as a subtle, living current that feeds both awareness and being.

In Ta***ic understanding, the Bindu represents Lord Shiva—the primordial Source from which all creation emerges. The same capacity that lets you shatter completely is the capacity that lets you feel joy at full volume. You don’t get to keep one and refuse the other.

Most people try to negotiate with this arrangement. They want the depth of feeling that makes life vivid without paying the corresponding cost of vulnerability to grief. It doesn’t work that way. The heart isn’t built with separate chambers for different intensities of feeling. It’s built with one capacity, and whatever carves it open on one side widens it on the other. Numb yourself to protect against sorrow and you numb the exact same tissue that would have let joy in fully.

This is why people who have survived real devastation often describe an unexpected side effect alongside the pain, a capacity for gratitude and delight that feels sharper than before, almost embarrassingly intense over small things. The carving didn’t just create a wound. It created more interior space. Grief, for all it takes, leaves the container larger than it found it, assuming the person doesn’t spend their life trying to seal the opening back shut.

This isn’t a reason to seek out suffering, and it isn’t consolation offered too early to someone still in the middle of losing something. It’s simply an honest description of how the architecture works, observed after the fact. The depth of the carving and the capacity for joy were never opposing forces. They were always the same excavation, viewed from two different sides of the same wound.

Nothing carves you open without also making more room.

Most people spend their whole lives trying to become someone by piling things on. Eckhart is saying the actual work runs the other direction entirely.

The instinct to grow through addition is almost universal. More knowledge, more achievements, more identities, more roles collected like proof of a life well built. Each addition feels like progress because it’s visible, measurable, something you can point to. Eckhart is describing a different kind of growth that produces no evidence you can display, because it consists entirely of things being removed rather than acquired.

What gets subtracted isn’t virtue or capability. It’s the accumulated layer of false self that builds up over a lifetime, the persona constructed to be liked, the defenses built to avoid old wounds, the beliefs adopted because they were safer than the truth. None of that was ever the soul. It was armor, and armor, however necessary it once was, eventually becomes the very thing standing between a person and who they actually are.

This is why real inner work so often feels like loss before it feels like anything else. Letting go of a defense you’ve relied on for decades doesn’t feel like liberation in the moment. It feels like exposure. But what’s being lost was never the self to begin with. It was insulation, and insulation, however protective, also blocks contact with anything real, including your own depths.

You were never meant to become more. You were meant to become less covered.

SILENCE

D: What is mauna?

M: That state which transcends speech and thought is mauna; it is meditation without mental activity. Subjugation of the mind is meditation; deep meditation is eternal speech. Silence is ever-speaking; it is the perennial flow of ‘language’. It is interrupted by speaking; for words obstruct this mute ‘language’.

Lectures may entertain individuals for hours without improving them. Silence, on the other hand, is permanent and benefits the whole of humanity. . . .
. By silence, eloquence is meant. Oral lectures are not so eloquent as silence. Silence is unceasing eloquence. . . . It is the best language.

There is a state when words cease, and silence prevails.

M: That becomes necessary if the sense of duality exists....

As long as you pay attention to ideas, your own or of others, you will be in trouble.

But if you disregard all teachings, all books, anything put into words, and dive deeply within yourself and find yourself, this alone will solve all your problems and leave you in full mastery of every situation, because you will not be dominated by your ideas about the situation.

Take an example. You are in the company of an attractive woman. You get ideas about her, and this creates a s*xual situation. A problem is created, and you start looking for books on continence or enjoyment. Were you a baby, both of you could be naked and together without any problem arising. Just stop thinking you are the bodies, and the problems of love and s*x will lose their meaning. With all sense of limitation gone, fear, pain and the search for pleasure -- all cease.

Only awareness remains.
