Basic Things To Know ✅

This image shows the day and night signals used by different types of vessels so they can be properly identified at sea.

🔆 Day Signals

During daytime, ships display shapes:
• RAM (Restricted Ability to Manoeuvre) – ball/diamond/ball shapes
• Fishing Vessel – two cones facing each other
• Sailing Vessel – no shapes unless also using the engine
• PD (Pilot Duty) Vessel – no special shapes, but has a pilot flag (not shown here)
• NUC (Not Under Command) – two black balls
• CBD (Constrained by Draft) – a cylinder shape

🌙 Night Signals

At night, ships use lights instead of shapes:
• RAM Vessel – red-white-red lights
• Fishing Vessel – red over white lights
• Sailing Vessel – red and green sidelights with no masthead light
• PD Vessel – white over red lights
• NUC Vessel – two red lights
• CBD Vessel – three red lights in a vertical line

These signals help other vessels know who has maneuvering priority and avoid collisions.

🚨 One Button Can Save Lives at Sea! 🌊⚓
An EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) is one of the most important life-saving devices carried onboard ships and survival craft. When activated during an emergency, it immediately starts transmitting a distress signal to satellites, helping rescue teams locate people in danger at sea.
Here’s how it works:
📡 The EPIRB sends a distress alert on 406 MHz to the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system.
🛰️ Satellites receive the signal and identify the beacon’s location using GPS coordinates.
📍 The distress information is forwarded to a Rescue Coordination Center (RCC).
🚁 Search and Rescue (SAR) teams are then deployed to the exact location.
⚠️ Many EPIRBs also transmit on 121.5 MHz, allowing nearby aircraft and rescue vessels to home in on the signal more accurately.
Most modern EPIRBs are designed to activate automatically if a ship sinks. Once released from its bracket, it floats on the water surface and continues transmitting emergency signals until help arrives.
In critical moments at sea, an EPIRB becomes the silent voice calling for rescue when every second matters. 🚢
