A street can be a route.
A building can be a control point.
A square can be a place we pass through.

But every place carries something that cannot always be seen on a map: memories, identities, stories, traditions and lived experiences.

A UNESCO initiative in Montenegro recently invited young people to explore cultural heritage, identity and belonging through schools, museums and public spaces.

This idea strongly connects with the spirit of ORIUNITE.

Through orienteering, we don’t simply learn how to navigate a place. We have the opportunity to discover its history, understand the people and communities connected to it, and look at familiar spaces from a different perspective.

Because sometimes, learning to navigate a place can also mean learning to understand it.

What a day for ORIUNITE in Hungary!

191 participants joined us for a very special orienteering experience at the meeting point of Hungary, Austria and Slovenia.



During the race, competitors didn't simply move from control to control: they crossed national borders several times, running freely through three countries within the same course.

And that is what made this event much more than an orienteering race.



This landscape carries the memory of a time when borders here meant barriers, controls and separation. Today, those same paths brought together people through sport.

From a border to cross with difficulty to a border you may barely notice while running.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

This is the idea behind ORIUNITE: using orienteering to rediscover places shaped by European history and giving them a new meaning through movement, encounters and shared experiences.

A huge thank you to Sibaris Club Hungary, to everyone who helped make the event possible, and of course to all 191 participants who crossed borders with us. ❤️

Learning, moving and promoting peace through orienteering!

During the summer, many schools in Cyprus remain open to offer children fun, creative and educational activities. At Agios Georgios School in Larnaca, ORIENTACTION had the opportunity to bring orienteering into this summer programme with a special initiative combining sport and learning.

After mapping the school area, the team organised a Quiz Orienteering event dedicated to the theme of “World Peace”. Along the course, participants had to navigate between different checkpoints while answering questions about peace, its symbols and values — from the Nobel Peace Prize to the dove as an international symbol of peace.

A total of 55 children, around 11 years old, took part in the activity, discovering how orienteering can be much more than finding the right route: it can also become a playful and engaging way to learn, reflect and share positive values.

Through ORIUNITE, we continue to use sport as a tool to bring young people together, encourage learning and promote a culture of inclusion, cooperation and peace.

The roads between Pietermaritzburg and Durban have witnessed more than a century of running.

The Comrades Marathon, first held in 1921, was not always the inclusive event we know today. For decades, South Africa's racial divisions were reflected in the race itself. Yet, from the mid-1970s, while apartheid still existed, the event gradually became one of the places where athletes of different backgrounds could stand on the same starting line, challenging barriers that extended far beyond sport.

Today, the Comrades Marathon is recognised not only as one of the world's greatest ultramarathons, but also as a powerful reminder that sport can evolve alongside society—and sometimes help lead that change.

At ORIUNITE, we believe these stories matter.

They remind us that places, events and communities shaped by division can become spaces for dialogue, shared experiences and new connections.

Every map has a history.
Every route can lead to understanding.

ORIUNITE Online Project Meeting – 16 July 2026

Before the summer break, the ORIUNITE consortium came together for our final online meeting to review the progress achieved so far and prepare for the next project milestones.

During the meeting, partners discussed the completion of the Unified Orienteering Maps that will be used during the upcoming local orienteering events across the participating countries. These maps represent an important step towards creating a shared and inclusive orienteering experience throughout Europe.

The consortium also focused on preparations for the next major project event, which will take place in Hungary on 30 August 2026. This international gathering will bring partners together once again to continue promoting inclusion, cooperation and active participation through orienteering.

We now look forward to reconnecting after the summer and continuing this exciting journey together!
