My Time Interning Under Lion City Sailors FC: A New Worldview on Youth Football Development ⛵️

My time interning under Lion City Sailors FC opened my eyes to a brand new worldview of how football academies are run and supported. To bring out the best in our youth footballers, it is vital that coaches and support staff are not only knowledgeable, but also engaging and passionate, creating an environment where training is truly meaningful and effective.❤️

My learnings from the Diploma in Sport Coaching, alongside the guidance of many experienced coaches, have reinforced the critical role of passion in youth development. These young athletes are eager to improve and genuinely enjoy their sport. As coaches, we must mirror the same enthusiasm and energy we wish to instil in them. Beyond motivation, it is equally important that we continue to upskill and reskill, ensuring confidence in our content delivery and equipping youths with the technical, tactical, and psychological skills they need to progress. 🎖

Through this internship, I also gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of logistical management. I learnt how even the smallest components of a system play a significant role in overall performance. From ensuring equipment is well-organised to maintaining high standards in training resources, these behind-the-scenes details elevate the quality and professionalism of the training environment. 💪

Overall, this 20-week internship programme has shaped me into a more disciplined, focused, receptive, and driven football coach. I am determined to soldier on in this exciting journey, using sport as a platform to nurture, inspire, and empower the next generation. ⚽️

From Participant to Intern: A Meaningful Journey with SportCares ⚽️🧸🎱🫶

My 20-week internship at SportSG under SportCares has been nothing but a deeply meaningful experience. SportCares, the philanthropic arm of Sport Singapore, focuses on engaging vulnerable individuals through sport and leveraging its power to uplift lives. Having been a participant of the Saturday Night Lights (SNL) programme for five years and part of the SportCares Champions Leadership Programme (SCLP), stepping into the role of an intern allowed me to see this mission from a completely new perspective. 💪

Through hands-on involvement in community sport programmes and events such as A Day To Remember (ADTR) and the HEARTS League Finale, I gained valuable exposure to both on-ground facilitation and behind-the-scenes operations. These experiences helped me appreciate the planning, coordination, and teamwork required to deliver inclusive programmes that create real social impact, while allowing me to apply coaching and leadership concepts from the DSC curriculum in real-world settings. 💯

Most importantly, this internship strengthened my confidence and sense of purpose in using sport to support vulnerable communities. It also made me realise that sport does not have to purely be just sports but also, a platform where it can engage us to do meaningful and beautiful things like volunteering and stepping out of our comfort zones to become more than what we were. My journey reflects SportCares’ belief in “Changing Lives Through Sport,” and I hope it inspires future DSC students and the wider community to see how sport can create meaningful pathways beyond the field. 💚
