In a Facebook post published on 11 June, Martin Gabriel questioned whether retiring hawkers left because of age or because rising costs and shrinking profitability made the business unsustainable.

His comments sparked broader discussion about graduate employment prospects, government policies, hawker centre management practices and the long-term viability of Singapore’s hawker ecosystem.

Spent two intensive hours this morning engaging the Heads of Departments in a comprehensive discussion on retrenchment management and its legal implications under the Singapore Labour Laws. The session covered the practical and human aspects of workforce restructuring, including retrenchment benefits, fair selection criteria, communication strategies, consultation processes, and the importance of handling such exercises with dignity, sensitivity and compliance.
