‼️3 reasons you’re losing weight but not losing Fat‼️

❌Only Cardio without Weights
Don’t get me wrong; cardio is very important for your heart health but the point here is that doing SOLELY Cardio when losing weight pretty much guarantees that you’ll lose Lean Muscle as well because there is simply no stimulus for the body to build/retain muscle tissue.

🫵Less Muscle = Weaker, Lower BMR, Easier to gain weight, worse metabolic health

❌Not eating enough protein
1.6g-2.2g protein per day per kg of bodyweight is considered optimal for muscle growth & retention. Higher for larger deficits. Without protein, muscle simply cannot grow. When losing weight, protein helps to mitigate muscle loss together with lifting weights/strength training.

❌Eating back your calories
Fitness trackers are basically full of s**t when they tell you that you have burnt 500kcal from a ‘Functional Strength Training’ workout. You may have in fact burnt 50-100kcal.

Losing weight alone is not the answer to your dream body. It’s usually the unnecessary body fat that you want to lose. In general, you never want to lose muscle.

While there are many things in life beyond your control like genetics & other circumstances, body fat & muscle (and by extension how you look) is largely within your ability to change.

Not to mention that the non-visual health benefits that come along with Lifting Weights like reducing diabetes & heart disease risk.

Weight is just a number.
What makes up that number is way more important.

Now, this is NOT a post to discount or discredit anyone in the medical field. Medical advancements are absolutely essential when it comes to saving lives. The roles of those in the healthcare space are not to be underestimated.

However, if there was truly a way to reduce your risk of MOST of the major non-communicable diseases like Type 2 Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Cancer & Heart Disease, would you take it?

Regular Strength Training, coupled with a high protein, fibre-rich diet, supplemented with a good sleep & hydration regime will undoubtedly make most people healthier.

Medicine is healthcare for the sick.
Lifting Weights is healthcare for the not-sick.

*Eat whatever you want, but actions have consequences. If health is your goal, then obviously you can’t eat pizza & chocolates all day AND be happy AND be healthy. You’ll be happy but likely won’t be very healthy. Obviously. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

If fat loss is your goal, you still need to stay within a calorie count. Obviously. 🫨🫨

If you think you might have disordered eating habits, please speak to someone. It took me years to eventually crawl out of it & i’m just sharing some logical firsthand strategies i found very useful for myself.

What you want isn’t ‘moderation’; i don’t just want to be ‘MODERATELY happy’ lol.

Moderation is for noobs. 🫠🫠

This is not a jab at pilates in any way.

However, Pilates can benefit you in many ways:

1. Any exercise is better than none.
2. Improve body awareness to be conscious of your COM & how to control it
3. May strengthen your core a bit but nowhere close to deadlifting your bodyweight
4. Fewer guys so it’s less creepy & lower barrier to entry (ladies feel more at ease starting out)
5. Pilates is basically strength training that appeals to women. It’s pure marketing; same s**t, different packaging but it works.

Lifting weights is good for you & makes you toned.
Pilates is good for you but doesn’t actually tone anything.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing Pilates, but if your goal is to look better naked & be toned & look fit in yoga pants, Lifting Weights will likely be much more effective. No shapely thighs or round glutes or toned shoulders were ever built from Pilates.

‼️‘Sweeteners give you cancer! Even the World Health Organization said so‼️

Don’t believe everything you read. Stop fear mongering everything & please stop blindly sharing what you don’t understand; you could end up doing more harm than good.

Let me first clarify that the research evidence here is absolutely excellent; it’s very high quality evidence on sweeteners, except the article absolutely butchered it into a strawman narrative about how bad sweeteners are.

Main claims:
1. Non-sugar Sweeteners may have ‘potential undesirable long term effects’ like cancer, diabetes & CVD.

Now this is based off not very high quality evidence (cohort studies). There are existing & stronger evidence (RCTs) on how sweeteners actually don’t increase the risk of cancer etc. at all. (PMID: 35285920, 2022) but the WHO article conveniently left that out.

In fact, in the same RCT study, there was evidence that sweeteners actually outperformed plain water for weight loss (people lost a little bit more weight with sweeteners than with water, for some reason improved their systolic blood pressure quite a lot more than water).

2. Non-sugar Sweeteners are not essential dietary factors & have no nutritional value.

By that logic, rice is not essential for survival either & hence we shouldn’t eat rice. 🤌

Also, sweeteners are not supposed to have ‘nutritional value’; they are just supposed to be sweet to curb your sweet tooth. Do you drink coke zero because it’s NUTRITIOUS? 🤷‍♂️🤌

For some reason, the article chose to present ONLY the ‘potentially harmful’ findings based on poor evidence yet completely ignored the positive findings from the SAME systematic review & meta analysis study they used to conclude that they don’t advise using sweeteners to lose weight.

❌3 Things you need to know before getting a Trainer

This post is inspired by the recent announcement of the NREP (National Registry for Exercise Professionals) & led me to think what message to send across to readers because there’s so much misunderstanding about what coaches do.

Can’t speak for the rest of the world but this should be helpful for my fellow coaches in Singapore.

1. We’re humans too. We get sick too. We have problems outside of work too. Our time is important too.

2. Unfortunately, we don’t know everything. Nobody knows everything; in fact, if your Trainer seems to know EVERYTHING & can give you diagnoses & health check ups with their eyes & fingers, you’re clearly underpaying the poor doctor in disguise. Coaches don’t treat injuries. Please don’t expect us to. At best, we can give you educated guesses & reasonably best course of action/management.

3. If you’re not going to trust me, don’t hire me. Don’t waste my time. I think every coach can relate to this. Hire someone credible & trust the process. Don’t just hire any Tom Dick Harry off the street simply because they’re cheap & end up not trusting their advice. You’re wasting both parties time, it’s a lose-lose situation.

Personal Training is & always will be a partnership; it’s a two-way street.
