The word chowk in Hindi means a town square, a place where people gathered. In Odissi CHOWK is the basic posture of the dance. CHOWK- a Centre for dance, started in 2007 with a handful of students, classes were held all over the island wherever there were studios available. In March 2012 CHOWK found a permanent place at Emily hill. Initially CHOWK was started with the sole purpose of es
tablishing Odissi as a strong Indian dance form in the region, but as my practice and my vision of what Indian contemporary dance should be became clear, I decided to start training students in the methodology developed and practiced by me and create contemporary works with them. My first work THE HUNGRY STONES using students was premiered at the Raaga series at esplanade in March 2011. Today CHOWK has two sections ,one where the students train in Odissi ,and the other, where they train in Contemporary. The main vision behind CHOWK is to make the students passionate about the form, only then will the rigour and discipline follow. To provide a platform where they would grow as artists and to create a self-produced repertory and choreography.
