Sharing my experience with MSIG Singapore – Travel Insurance Claim - Associated with My Scoot Flight Booking
I’m sharing my experience to find out whether other HYROX participants have faced similar travel insurance issues when an injured competition partner prevents them from participating.
I was scheduled to travel to Jakarta on 26 June 2026 for HYROX Jakarta on 27 June 2026, where I had registered for the Pro Women’s Doubles category.
Before the event, my partner sustained a serious calf muscle tear and was medically declared unfit to travel or compete. As this was a doubles event, I could not participate alone and had to cancel my flight and related arrangements. I submitted the relevant medical and supporting documents to MSIG.
My claim was initially rejected under Section 11(b) on the basis that the injured person was neither the insured nor a family member. I then asked whether the claim would have been considered differently if my partner had been my husband, sister or mother. In its subsequent response, MSIG referred to an additional requirement that the injury or illness must necessitate hospitalisation.
I understand that insurers must assess claims according to the applicable policy terms. However, I am seeking clarification on how the hospitalisation requirement applies in these circumstances. A torn calf muscle may make someone medically unfit to fly or participate in a high-intensity event such as HYROX without requiring hospitalisation. In this case, my partner was medically advised not to travel or compete, and I was unable to participate without a partner.
I asked MSIG to reconsider my claim on an ex gratia basis, taking into account the specific circumstances and the supporting medical evidence. My request was subsequently declined.
Has anyone else had a travel insurance claim affected because their doubles or relay partner became injured before an event, making participation impossible? I would appreciate hearing about your experiences, particularly in relation to sporting events and registered competition partners.
This experience has affected my confidence in MSIG and my willingness to recommend the company to others in the HYROX community. I hope sharing the details will help clarify how similar situations are assessed and assist other participants in understanding the relevant travel insurance coverage before registering for an event.
