We recently experienced the joy of being students the other day, while attending Rakyat Archive: Scent Storytelling with Aroma Nostalgia. Although we were going out of personal interest, we quickly realised that our experience was absolutely a Centred Space one, as well.
 
It is experiences like this that help us illustrate what we mean when we speak about not being able to separate the decolonising of one’s practice from the rest of one’s life. As fellow educators, we couldn’t help but notice parallels across what we did on the day and what we offer through our classes, workshops and trainings. Here are some thoughts and reflections around how the morning landed for us – personal reflections to follow!

The body first. Modality second. 🌀

In today’s world, many of us are looking for quick, one-stop shop solutions to our needs, wants and desires, including our wellbeing. ESPECIALLY our wellbeing.

Here at Centred Space, we see ourselves as one of many moving parts, contributing to a vast ecosystem.

This is why we love the practice - and it is a practice - of referring out.

It’s important to us that we develop trust in and nurture relationships with other professionals within the community. We do not engage with fear-based grabbing of all opportunities: this is rooted in a scarcity mindset and can push us beyond our scope of practice.

The practice of referring is reciprocal in nature, not a one-for-one exchange, and helps move us away from the transactional nature of the industry.

We love being able to suggest our peers to clients and people who enquire, when we feel there’s a better fit for them. We are also deeply grateful to those who point folks in our direction.

What might our community look like if we moved away from trying to do it all, and gave space for this ecosystem to breathe? 🌀

Here it is, part 2 of our recent call with Kris and Tabitha from BodyTree Academy.

We never ask these questions expecting concrete answers. Instead, we step into such conversations with the willingness to listen, consider, reflect and share. We try our best to let go of the need to be ‘right’, and instead see where curiosity and compassion can take us.

What makes a “good” teacher?

We sat with Kris and Tabitha from BodyTree Academy and meandered our way through and around this question - from preconceived notions of ‘good’ and ‘bad’, to our initial wishes as teachers, and now where we find ourselves, and the questions that arise as we continue to travel the teaching path and evolve.

Or,

As a teacher, how do you feel when you ask for feedback and it’s not particularly rosy? Do you fear asking such questions?

Invitational language is easy to emulate, difficult to actually practice. The more you know your why, the greater the ease around this. Are you ready to wiggle your toes in the silt? 🌀

There’s more to CET planning than meets the eye. Yes, there are slides to redesign and logistics to figure out, but before that, there is the work behind the work: revisiting our references, updating content with new sources, and sometimes letting go of old teachings.

Then there’s the softer but no less important aspects of the preparation: conversations between us that have no easy answers, walks to clear our minds, and the coffee and tea that goes cold because we got too deep into something important. This is just as much the work as the reading and cross-referencing. See you in September? 🌀

Everyone wants to have “trauma-aware”in their bio, but just how many of us are willing to witness ourselves as the perpetrators of others’ trauma?

Choosing to decolonise one’s practice means choosing the difficult and often messy path of learning AND unlearning - over and over again. We also need to be observant of who we learn from, whose lessons we value and why.

During our Trauma Awareness & Decolonisation CET, we often touch on ideas around power and hierarchy, and what the alternatives can look like within the world of yoga, movement and wellness. Learning that these ideas have not only landed, but have become integrated within our cohort’s offerings, gives us hope and strengthens our belief that there *is* another way. These are the ripples we care so deeply about at Centred Space! 🌀
