🐉 Mastering the Groundwork: Wudang TaiYi Swimming Dragon (太乙游龙拳) Basic Stances 🥋

In Chinese martial arts, power rises from the roots. The coiling fluidity, waist articulation, and sudden directional shifts of Swimming Dragon Boxing depend directly on a solid, versatile foundation.
Here are five core stances every practitioner must master:
1. Horse Stance | 马步 (Mǎ Bù)
Structure: Feet roughly 2 to 3 shoulder widths apart, knees bent out over the toes, thighs sinking toward parallel, spine upright, and pelvis tucked naturally.
Focus: Grounding root, hip/groin opening, and deep lower-body endurance.

2. Bow Stance | 弓步 (Gōng Bù)
Structure: Front knee bent to roughly 90 degrees directly above the ankle; rear leg extended with the heel firmly anchored into the floor.
Focus: Generating forward-driving mass, stretching the rear hip flexor, and pushing power through the spine.

3. Crouching Stance (Drop / Sweep Stance) | 仆步 (Pū Bù)
Structure: Deep squat into one leg while the other leg extends fully out to the side, both soles flat on the floor.
Focus: Pelvic mobility, low level evasion, and setting up sweep attacks.

(Sān Qī Bù / Bàn Mǎ Bù)
Structure: A modified, lateral horse stance where both feet remain grounded, but the weight distribution shifts to 70% on the rear/loaded leg and 30% on the lead leg.
Focus: Seamless defense-to-attack transitions, sitting the hip back to yield while keeping the lead leg anchored yet ready to spring forward.

5. Resting Stance (Cross-Legged Stance) | 歇步 (Xiē Bù)
Structure: Cross one leg behind the other and twist downward into a deep squat, resting the hips near the rear heel while keeping the torso coiled and upright.
Focus: Spiral rotational power, dodging under high strikes, and exploding upward from a compressed base.

💡 Internal Cue: Keep the sinking weight anchored at the Yongquan (涌泉) point, relax the hips (松胯), and let the waist direct the transition between every shift!

Good Tai Chi isn’t just about remembering the sequence or making the movements look smooth. It starts with having a strong foundation.

In our Wudang training, we spend a lot of time working on 基本功 and 身法 — learning how to build a stable body, move naturally, and connect the whole body together.

It’s easy to focus on the routine because that’s what people see. But the real work often happens behind the scenes — repeating the basics, improving the body’s mobility, refining posture, and learning to relax without losing structure.

With a good foundation, the movements gradually become more natural, connected and effortless.

“When the roots are strong, the tree can move with the wind.”

That’s the journey of Tai Chi — not rushing to look good, but taking the time to build the body properly.

Unlock the Foundation of Tai Chi: The 13 Postures (Shí Sān Shì) ☯️

Did you know that all Tai Chi movements, no matter how complex, come down to just 13 core principles?
These aren't just physical poses; they are a blend of martial energy, footwork, and internal balance rooted in ancient philosophy. The 13 Postures are divided into 8 Gates (Hand Techniques) and 5 Steps (Footwork & Stance).
Here is a quick guide to understanding them:

The 4 Primary Cardinal Directions:
Peng (掤) - Ward Off: Expanding energy outward like an inflating balloon. (Water)
Lu (捋) - Roll Back: Yielding and redirecting incoming force backward. (Fire)
Ji (擠) - Press: Concentrated forward force using two hands together. (Metal)
An (按) - Push: Downward and forward grounding energy. (Wood)

The 4 Diagonal Directions:
5. Cai (採) - Pluck / Pull Down: Quick, sudden downward leverage.
6. Lie (挒) - Split: Dynamic force twisting in opposite directions.
7. Zhou (肘) - Elbow Strike: Short-range power using the elbow.
8. Kao (靠) - Shoulder / Body Strike: Close-quarters power through the torso and shoulder.

🪵 The 5 Steps (Wǔ Xíng / 五行) — Lower Body & Footwork
These represent footwork directions tied to the Five Elements, giving you stability and mobility:
Jin (進) - Advance Forward: Moving with intention. (Fire)
Tui (退) - Retreat Backward: Step back while maintaining balance. (Water)
Gu (顧) - Look Left: Lateral movement and awareness to the left. (Wood)
Pan (盼) - Glance Right: Lateral movement and awareness to the right. (Metal)
Ding (定) - Central Equilibrium: Remaining rooted, calm, and balanced at the center. (Earth)

💡 The Key Takeaway:
When the 8 Energies in the hands sync seamlessly with the 5 Footwork Directions, you achieve complete flow, power, and internal harmony in your practice.

🇸🇬 A Day to Remember ·

Some moments deserve to be captured. ❤️

At the end of our Wudang Health & Wellness Seminar, we gathered together for a group photo — almost 30 of us, from different backgrounds and walks of life, coming together through a shared interest in Wudang, Tai Chi, health and wellness.

What started as a National Day celebration became something more meaningful:

A morning of movement.
A moment of stillness.
An introduction to traditional Wudang practices.
And most importantly, a gathering of people who shared the same space, energy and experience.

📸 One group photo.
Many stories.
One beautiful memory.

For us, this is also what traditional martial arts and wellness are about.

It is not only about the forms we practise.

It is about the people we meet,
the friendships we build,
the knowledge we share,
and the memories we create along the way.

As we celebrate Singapore’s 61st National Day, we are grateful to everyone who took the time to join us and celebrate together.

🇸🇬 Different journeys.
☯️ One shared practice.
❤️ One community.

Happy 61st National Day, Singapore!

May we continue to move, learn, grow and age with grace — together.

🇸🇬 WUDANG HEALTH & WELLNESS SEMINAR 2026
Celebrating Singapore’s 61st National Day

What a meaningful way to celebrate Singapore’s 61st birthday! 🇸🇬❤️

NewAgeTaiChi was honoured to welcome close to 30 participants to our Wudang Free Health & Wellness Seminar, where we came together to celebrate National Day while experiencing and sharing traditional Wudang health and wellness practices.

Rather than simply learning a Tai Chi routine, today’s seminar offered a glimpse into the wider Wudang system — where movement, breathing, stillness and mindfulness come together.

We explored:

🥋 Traditional Wudang warm-up & health exercises
🧘 Proper leg positioning for seated meditation
🌿 Wudang Danfang Baduanjin
🧘‍♂️ 15 minutes of seated meditation
🔥 Pa Ba Xu 拍八虚
💨 Hei Ha Gong
🥋 Jingang Rao Bi

One of the highlights was sharing an idea from the traditional Wudang perspective:

Wudang is not simply about learning a Tai Chi form.

Tai Chi, Qigong, Daoist health practices and meditation can all be part of a broader journey of cultivating the body, breath and mind.

And Master Yip shared an interesting thought:

“61 years old is still young for a nation.
For a person, 61 may already be considered senior.
But from the Daoist perspective, 60 is merely the infant stage of cultivation and wellness.” 😊

Perhaps that is a beautiful way to look at ageing.

We may grow older in years, but there is always room to begin again.

To move better.
To breathe better.
To become calmer.
To understand ourselves a little more.

Age is a number.
Cultivation is a lifelong journey.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this National Day celebration so meaningful.

May Singapore continue to grow with strength, harmony and vitality.

🇸🇬 Happy 61st National Day, Singapore!

「61岁,对于一个国家来说,还很年轻;
对于一个人来说,已经进入乐龄阶段;
