You spot your toddler padding across the room on their toes and immediately wonder:
"๐๐ด ๐ต๐ฉ๐ข๐ต ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ?"
Often, yes-- especially when children are young and still developing their walking pattern.
Toe walking can occur during early walking, and standing on tiptoe is itself a normal toddler movement skill.
As children gain experience, however, their gait should gradually mature. By around 3 years old, walking generally becomes smoother and more coordinated, with a regular heel-to-toe pattern.
So don't just ask โDoes my child toe walk?โ
๐๐ผ๐ผ๐ธ ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป:
๐ฃ Can they put their heels down and walk heel-to-toe too?
๐ฃ Is it occasional or nearly constant?
๐ฃ Does it happen on both sides?
๐ฃ Is it becoming less frequent as their walking develops?
๐ฃ Are their other motor milestones progressing as expected?
Persistent toe walking sometimes occurs without an identifiable underlying condition. However, it can also accompany muscular, neurological or other developmental differences, which is why an ongoing pattern is worth discussing with a qualified professional.
Toe walking by itself doesn't tell you why a child is doing it. An assessment looks at the whole child โ their gait, range of movement, strength, muscle tone and overall development.
