West J United are Champions of 'Glow in the Dark' tournament!!!

Singapore's pioneer glow-in-the-dark street soccer tournament was held recently at Boon Lay CC organized by its very vibrant Youth Executive Committee.

A total of 12 teams competed for top honours in a dimly lit futsal court with luminous light sticks marking. Of the four teams from the SportCares’ Saturday Night Lights programme, SportCares-WJU Honour, emerged champions of the Open category with another team, SportCares-WJU Pride placed in 4th.

Despite fielding the youngest teams of the tournament, SportCares-WJU Honour, managed to remain unbeaten in their pursuit to secure the title. While the evening was all about the tournament at hand, the players went on to pick up some important life lessons too. Particularly a lanky Republic Polytechnic student, Muhammad Akid Alif.

Akid who scored his team’s winning goal for their first match, has a unique story behind his passion for football. Unlike other kids, he was not into football and instead was more of a musician as he spent his primary school years as a drummer on the school band. He only started playing football when he got into secondary school and has since never looked back.

He mentioned, “Though winning the title was on our mind, we took home some valuable lessons at the end of the day. Like how we should always keep our cool in a match, never be overconfident and always give your best when you play and it will reap benefits.”

SportCares is proud of the boys’ teamwork and discipline in their debut futsal tournament. Said Coach Din: “It was such a memorable feeling when we won the finals. And it was a lot different for me as a coach because I could only guide the boys from the sidelines and hope they come away with a win. But they did one better and became champions.”

He added that the training given to the boys at SNL certainly helped his team at this tournament and it goes to show that the programme is indeed headed down the right path. “SportCares’ SNL programme has benefitted the players tremendously because of the holistic environment and sense of community they provide. This gives them the freedom to concentrate 100% on training and giving their best.”
