Matpies F.C.

Matpies F.C. THE MATS, OF NEWCASTLE UNITED SINGAPORE What started with 10 gentlemen, playing futsal on the weekends, started to expand and slowly became a football team.

Founded in the later half of 2015, the team played 2 friendlies before decided to participate in a local league. At the moment, the team is currently plying its trade in the SAFRA Night League (Division A), playing on every other Tuesday or Wednesday night. The team is also open to friendly matches. Do not be shy to approach the team or drop them a message via Facebook. The team definitely enjoys football, good companions and of course, like all weekend warriors, good food!

*Full-Time*
Matpies F.C 12-0 Donemen United

The boys strolled to a huge win on Wednesday night with 8 different scorers. Some silky attacking football and high pressing from the top were on show, as the Matpies adopted a new 3-5-2 formation.

The team will be playing their last friendly match of the year on 29 November against PSA Marine, here's hoping they will be able to keep up with the winning momentum.

Unfortunately, utility player Inn succumbed to his 2nd hamstring tear this year, and was withdrawn around the 55th minute mark. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Scorers:
Hardy x3
Hairul x2
Inn x2
Asman x1
Wan x1
Sam x1
Rezza x1
Qinghua x1

Finally after 2 long years, The Matpies locked horns in the East vs West contest. There were a lot of the old custodians and also new faces in this match-up.

The dreadlock was broken by West' Forward Inn, who coolly dispatched after a defence-splitting pass from Nazza. Just before the break, East' Hairul levelled the scoreline, squeezing the ball in from just outside the box. If anything, the first half was just a teaser of what was to come in the second half.

The second half started in similar fashion, with the West dominating the early parts of the half and went ahead again through Irfan, after good work on the right. They extended the lead minutes later with a beautiful curling effort from Yusof after an inviting knockdown by Inn.

The East was not finished though, and came back into the match with Hairul grabbing his second of the match, volleying a scrumptious effort into the right corner of the net after a pass from Aidil. They levelled the scores when Asman converted after good work on the left, from a weighted pass from Aidil again. The East took the lead for the first time in the match with the Skipper Nav leaving the West Defenders scrambling and bursting the net with a scorching left-footed shot, while the impressive Aidil completed his hat-trick of assists.

However, the West did not panic after going behind and took dominance during the last 10 minutes of the contest. Their efforts paid off as after missing multiple chances to level, Hardy won a penalty which Inn took with aplomb to grab his brace. Both sides hustled desperately for the winner but could not find another breakthrough. The scores were tied at 4-4 until the final whistle.

Scorers:

East - Hairul X2, Asman, Naveed
West - Inn X2, Irfan, Yusof

MOTM:

Every single Matpie, regardless of East or West, who came down and played with absolute passion and grit.

We are back from a short hiatus with another featured player segment, and there is no better way than to showcase our own number 9, Muhamad Sha'ri or better known as Sha’ri Shearer. No prizes for guessing who his NUFC idol is, as Sha’ri highlighted the Geordie hero’s unmatched passion and commitment to the Newcastle United cause.

In the current squad, Sha’ri enjoys watching attacking duo Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson putting their acts together to conjure up goals for the Magpies. Speaking of acting, Sha’ri has a hidden talent in the world of showbiz and has appeared in quite a number of shows on Suria. His passion for acting stemmed from his love for Marvel, especially Spiderman. Maybe we could be seeing a Spidey celebration when the season kicks off?

For Matpies, Sha’ri plays as a Centre-Forward and is known for his winning mentality and putting his body on the line for the team. He cited team-mates such as Hairul, Hafiz, Aidil, and veterans Zad and Abg Boy as his inspiration within the team. However, his proudest Matpies highlight was receiving the Most Hardworking Player award in 2017.

On the eve of Matchday, we feature our flying Full-Back Muhammad Gaddafy, better known as Gadd. For reasons unknown, Gadd dons the number 89 for Matpies F.C.

In Matpies, Gadd is arguably one of the better tacklers of the ball, often sliding in on the turf. Gadd is ever so passionate about his fitness and is one of the fittest among the squad although some might argue this point due to his constant battle against calves cramp, mind you.

Gadd cited that it is an honor to be playing with some of his peers, namely Nav, Madi, Hairul, Hafiz, Naza, and Ameen. Those are the players he looks up to in order to improve on his game, other than his NUFC heroes past and present which includes James Milner, Mathieu Debuchy and Isaac Hayden. Ultimately, Gadd's biggest footballing idol is none other than Portuguese icon Cristiano Ronaldo.

Do catch Gadd in action when the new season kicks off, or you can also approach him to sign up for dancing classes. Gadd specializes in Hip Hop Dance and is quite the B-Boy!

In our last segment, we featured one half of our Centre Midfield pairing. The other half is Adly Nurhilmy , or Adly for short. Don't get mistaken for their identical names.

The Matpies number 5 specializes in ball-winning and the occasional defence-splitting passes for the Forwards. The team is blessed with Set-Piece specialists, and Adly is one of them. Due to his valuable attributes, he won the Best New Player award in 2017.

It comes as no surprise that Adly appreciates great free-kick takers, stating Emre Belozoglu as his biggest footballing idol. The former Toon Playmaker is also the reason Adly wanted beş on the back of his kit. Oh, that is 5 in Turkish in case you are wondering. Apart from Emre, his biggest influences are David Ginola, Laurent Robert and Miguel Almiron.

Adly mentioned his favourite Matpies F.C. highlight was his debut and the wonder goal he scored in the Safra Cup 3rd & 4th placing match. Yes, of course, it was from a free-kick, all from 25 yards mind you.

Off the pitch, Adly enjoys gardening and going for movie marathons. He also owns a home-based steamed cakes business. Surely I deserve a scrumptious one after writing this, no?

Our next featured player is none other than Aidil Muhaimin , nicknamed Dirlo due to the similiarity in playing style to that of former Italian maestro Andrea Pirlo. Unsurprisingly, he also dons the number 21 for Matpies F.C.

Despite his love for Pirlo, Aidil has always had a soft spot for French players, citing David Ginola, Yohan Cabaye and Allan Saint-Maximin as his 3 favourites. This could also be due to the fact NUFC has not always had an array of Italian players to choose from.

For Matpies, Aidil predominantly plays in the centre of the pitch, and can play in either the defensive or attacking berth. Set pieces are his forte, and he is also known in the team as the scorer of spectacular long-range goals. However, such is his prowess, he is also quite a dependable finisher in 1v1 situations. Aidil is the only Matpies to have received a Player of the Month award by Safra League, after scoring 4 goals in that month. Not an easy feat, that.

It is criminal to be talented both on and off the field, but that is Aidil for you. A budding Film-Maker. A Puppeteer, namely working with 'Samad the Puppet'. A musical prodigy who sings and raps, and can play multiple instruments. A former Scrabble National Champion. Oh yeah, I can go all day. But sadly, this is where I end this biography. Catch Aidil when the new season kicks off and do not forget to ask for his autograph. Well, not before I do of course.

Today's featured player is our Defensive Midfielder Emi Drekkerz, or Emi for short. He wears the number 10 for Matpies F.C, which is definitely not something you would associate with a hard-tackling, ball-winning Midfielder, though Emi has a knack for the defence-splitting passes and the occassional cheeky dummies.

Outside of football, Emi loves travelling and has quite a passion for Malay Arts, particularly the traditional Malay Dance and the Kompang, also known as the Rebana. Again, surprising us behind the tough persona on the pitch.

Within NUFC, Emi loved Kevin Keegan's Entertainers era, and players like David Ginola and Faustino Asprilla caught his eye. He also idolizes former German Midfielder Dietmar Hamann and the wizardry of current superstar Allan Saint-Maximin.

Emi's favourite Matpies highlight was the penalty shoot-out win in the Quarter-Finals of the Safra Cup in 2016, which the club eventually finished in 4th place. One notable personal achievement was the Most Valuable Player award Emi won the following year. Do catch him in action in the middle of the field when the new season kicks off!

There is no better way to tackle matchday than to feature our Left-Back Zuhaili Arof, or Zul for short. It is no coincidence that the Matpies number 2's greatest footballing attribute is tackling either!

Hailed by the gaffer as one of the most committed players in the squad, it comes as no surprise that Zul has made the left defensive role his own. Don't be fooled by the defensive superiority of his game, as he is quite the marauding wing-back, often overlapping his midfield counterparts, much like his current Toon idol, Matt Ritchie. Another former NUFC hero he mentioned is of course, the great Alan Shearer.

As an avid traveller himself, Zul's favourite Matpies F.C highlight was when we made the trip to Kuala Lumpur and played a friendly match there, which he capped with a wonderful brace. Do not miss his flying action on the left wing when the new season kicks off!

The man the team looks for when goals are needed. Our next featured player is Rafael Hisam, better know as Sam, who is also NUFCSG main team's gaffer.

You must be wondering why is the number 13 wearing the goalkeeper's gloves in the picture. That is because Sam is a valuable utility player in Matpies F.C. Sam started out as a Goalkeeper, but due to his speed, agility and finishing prowess, he has since moved on to his current favoured position as a Winger. It is no wonder he was awarded the Most Commited Player award in 2017.

As a versatile footballer himself, it is understandable that Sam looks up to players in various positions. Namely Kieron Dyer, Obafemi Martins, Craig Bellamy, Laurent Robert, Alan Shearer, Shay Given and Pavel Srnicek from the past. While from the current NUFC setup he idolizes Allan Saint-Maximin, Jacob Murphy and Martin Dubravka.

For Matpies, Sam cited making the Safra Cup Semi-Finals was a great achievement for the club, while being the team's Top Scorer for 2 straight seasons marked his favourite personal achievement. Will he make it a Hat Trick of top scorer awards, or will there be a new competitor to his crown? We shall wait till the new season kicks off!

Over the years, he has been one of the most loyal NUFC supporters and was heavily involved in setting up the first NUFCSG 11-a-side team. Nicknamed Abang Boy and Che Li, we are featuring Boyllamy Che Li this evening.

Abang Boy is a well-known individual amongst his students and friends in many social communities. Aside from football, he is also involved in cycling, shooting, bands, and performing arts. Did I mention he even writes scripts for dramas, soliloquys and monologues?

In the football scene, Abang Boy was tied up with club football at a very young age, representing Farrer Park United, Toa Payoh United, Singapore Combined School, SAFSA and Khalsa. He got to know and started being a fan of NUFC through reading Match and Shoot magazines and watched highlights every Sunday Morning via Big League Soccer as there were no internet or live coverage during those days. His favourite players include Gavin Peacock, Peter Beardsley, Andrew Cole, and Les Ferdinand.

In Matpies F.C, Abang Boy's role as an advisor was and still is crucial in helping the club get to where it is now. His personal best Matpies highlight was when we organised our very own inter-zonal tournament and his team from the North won the cup. Competition aside, no matter win, draw or lose, to Abang Boy it is already an achievement when the players give their utmost whenever they put on the Black and White.
