When we talk about breaking generational cycles, we tend to think about the more obvious wounds we don’t want our children to inherit.
But beliefs are inherited too.
What do our children learn about gender from watching us? About consent? About whose needs matter more? About what a husband or wife is entitled to expect from the other?
72% of men surveyed in Singapore agreed that a man is entitled to s*x from his spouse.
That statistic is confronting. But I’m perhaps even more interested in what sits underneath it, because these beliefs didn’t suddenly appear in adulthood.
Our children are watching and learning long before we think we’re teaching them anything.
Breaking generational cycles also means questioning the things previous generations taught us. 🩵
