The way you move evolves as your body begins to hold space for a new chapter. Pregnancy doesn’t require your practice to pause — some days, returning to your breath is enough. With thoughtful prenatal modifications, expecting mothers can continue to experience asanas (poses) safely with ease.

Always inform your teacher if you’re pregnant. Consult with your medical professional to understand what is appropriate for you, and listen to your body.

Ken Harakuma is the first Japanese practitioner certified by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, with a decade of training in Mysore. He is the founder of IYC Japan and Yoga Festa, and holds E-RYT 500 certification in Ashtanga, Iyengar, Thai massage, and Reiki.
