Don’t ever feel ashamed to bail out from your rebreather.

On a recent deep dive, about 80 minutes in, I started to feel nauseous. I ran through a diluent flush and a quick self-check, but the symptoms didn’t go away. I informed my teammate and made the decision to bail out to open circuit.

In moments like this, there are many possible factors—but the priority is always the same: listen to your body, trust your training, and act early.

I chose to follow what I was taught. Not just for my own safety, but to avoid putting my teammate in a more difficult situation if things escalated.

There is no ego underwater. Making a conservative decision is not a failure—it’s good judgment.

[Thank you the student who did his GUE Fundamentals recently with our Instructor Jimmy Choo]

During our training sessions, Jimmy demonstrated excellent techniques for various dive drills. One area we struggled with was multitasking—such as deploying an SMB while maintaining proper buoyancy and acting as the deco person to monitor ascend speed and time. This caused quite a bit of anxiety among us. Jimmy noticed our stress and thoughtfully planned the next dive as a fun dive, encouraging us to relax and enjoy the experience.

He took on the roles of deco man and SMB handler himself, allowing us to focus on the dive. During the ascend, I was facing Jimmy and was genuinely impressed by how smoothly he managed multiple tasks—especially while also handling his dry suit buoyancy. This gave me confidence that, with practice, it’s possible to manage all the required drills independently.

Jimmy also took the time to explain the importance of these multitasking drills, emphasizing that not every dive will go according to plan. He offered valuable advice on how I can continue to improve and progress in my diving journey.

Overall, Jimmy is an outstanding instructor, and I would definitely recommend him to my friends.
