How Running Slower Helped Me: My Story
At around 38, I went through a midlife slump. Life became routine… work, repeat, work again. Weight creeping up, cholesterol borderline, energy low.
That was when my partner, Dominic suggested, “Why not try running?”
I started with 2 to 3 km a few times a week. Slowly it became 5 km, then eventually 10 km. I still remember my first 10 km. I was happy, but completely drained.
Then in December 2015, everything changed. A serious accident left me with a broken femur in 4 parts, fractured ribs, an injured wrist, and a slightly shorter right leg. Doctors were unsure if I could run properly again.
Recovery restarted from just 1 km a day. Slowly, running stopped being about performance and became about rebuilding consistency. That was also how REDCAN.club started.
Later, my former OC, Hong Hp, introduced me to the Maffetone (MAF) method, similar to Zone 2 training. Running slower, staying aerobic, controlling heart rate. At first, the run felt too slow because I need to maintain the heartrate. But over time, everything changed.
Today, I can finish the same 10 km feeling strong instead of drained. And moving into trail running taught me this even more clearly. Endurance matters more than speed. A strong aerobic base is the real foundation.
Looking back, running rebuilt my life twice.
If you are rebuilding your health, fitness, or even your life, start small. Slow down if you need to. Consistency matters more than intensity.
Sometimes, slowing down is exactly what moves your life forward.
REDCAN.club 也是在那个阶段开始成立的。
