How Running Slower Helped Me: My Story

At around 38, I went through a midlife slump. Life became routine… work, repeat, work again. Weight creeping up, cholesterol borderline, energy low.

That was when my partner, Dominic suggested, “Why not try running?”

I started with 2 to 3 km a few times a week. Slowly it became 5 km, then eventually 10 km. I still remember my first 10 km. I was happy, but completely drained.

Then in December 2015, everything changed. A serious accident left me with a broken femur in 4 parts, fractured ribs, an injured wrist, and a slightly shorter right leg. Doctors were unsure if I could run properly again.

Recovery restarted from just 1 km a day. Slowly, running stopped being about performance and became about rebuilding consistency. That was also how REDCAN.club started.

Later, my former OC, Hong Hp, introduced me to the Maffetone (MAF) method, similar to Zone 2 training. Running slower, staying aerobic, controlling heart rate. At first, the run felt too slow because I need to maintain the heartrate. But over time, everything changed.

Today, I can finish the same 10 km feeling strong instead of drained. And moving into trail running taught me this even more clearly. Endurance matters more than speed. A strong aerobic base is the real foundation.

Looking back, running rebuilt my life twice.

If you are rebuilding your health, fitness, or even your life, start small. Slow down if you need to. Consistency matters more than intensity.

Sometimes, slowing down is exactly what moves your life forward.

REDCAN.club 也是在那个阶段开始成立的。

March runs are always tough to organise.

School holidays, public holidays… somehow attendance is usually not great.

So really want to say thank you to those who still made the effort to come down yesterday. Especially to Tecsun and family who came all the way from KL.

But yesterday turned out to be a really good one. Good energy, good company… just nice.

Put together a short video from the run, nothing fancy, just to remember the moments.

Thanks again for showing up. See you guys next month.

March has always been a tough month for us at REDCAN.

Attendance tends to dip.
Maybe it’s the holidays.
Maybe it’s the school break.
Maybe work is starting to pile up.
Or maybe… we’re slowly losing track of our New Year resolutions.

Whatever the reason, let’s change that.

Let’s break the trend.

Join us tomorrow for the run.

🇸🇬 REDCAN National Day Challenge 2025 🇸🇬

This year, in celebrating Singapore’s 60th birthday, we set ourselves a new challenge: to walk 10.6 km.

Why 10.6? Because 60 years is six decades. Six decades can be written as 10 × 6.
Instead of multiplying, we placed the numbers side by side: 10.6. A small twist, but one that carries meaning.

Multiplication represents accumulation, achievements stacked one upon another, milestones built over time. That is the story of our nation.
But 10.6, written as a single number, speaks of integration, decades becoming one journey, a continuous path we all walk together.

And so we walked. Some completed the full loop, while others stepped off earlier. But the heart of today was not in the distance covered, nor in the finish line crossed. The heart was in the act of showing up.

Because in life, as in nation-building, progress is not made only by those who finish every race. It is made by those who dare to begin. Those who step forward. Those who choose to show up, again and again.

Here’s to Singapore at 60. May we keep walking, not just to finish, but to keep showing up for one another.
