我曾问一个团队: "你们的使命是什么?"
每个人都能逐字复述使命宣言。太棒了!
然后我问:"这句话是什么意思?"
接下来...五种不同的解读!

"哦,我以为这项的意思是..."
"等等,这里应该是指..."
"我不认为这是我们份内该做的..."

这不是孤立事件。我在与不同团队的协作中经常遇到这种情况。

问题是:缺乏使命清晰度会严重影响团队绩效、协作和价值创造。

好消息是:这是可以改变的!

A team I worked with can recite their mission statement perfectly. However, when I asked what it meant, I received five different answers.

很多团队的使命宣言都有这个问题: 听起来很励志,但实际上无法指导决策。

这就像 GPS 告诉你 "往前走",却不告诉你往哪个方向走多远。

有效的使命宣言应该让团队成员在面对各种请求时,能有把握地说 "要" 或 "不要"。

What happens when you consistently have coaching-style conversations with each of your team members?

It might feel a little different at first, for both of you.

But give it a few weeks, and something starts to shift.

✓ Team members come to conversations with more preparation and more ownership.
✓ They start solving problems they used to bring to you.
✓ They take initiative.
✓ Engagement rises.

This is the compounding effect of consistent coaching conversations, and it's supported by Gallup's research. Jim Clifton, Gallup's Chairman, puts it this way: "Great managing is an act of coaching, not one of directing and administrating."

Quick question for team leaders:
If you asked three of your team members, "What does our mission statement mean?", would they give you the same answer?

If not, you've just discovered why your team struggles to prioritise.

Your mission statement should be the compass that guides decisions when everything feels urgent, and stakeholders are making demands from all sides.
But most mission statements I've seen are either too vague ("change the world") or so generic they could belong to any team.

I've identified six characteristics that make mission statements actually work, especially when your team includes people from different cultures or locations.
