🐾🖤 VELHO’S LONG OVERDUE UPDATE…. IS A GREAT ONE!

After 4 long months of healing journey from a severe achilles tendon injury, after thorough and intensive physiotherapy under the tact of Erica Van Eekeren and Fysio4Paws Sweden Velho reached a beautiful milestone today.

We have been gradually building strength and carefully entering the last stage of his brace disassembly, and the last three weeks it has already been completely off.

Since then short walks on even terrain were incorporated into his daily regimen, but today - today Velho walked on the road, in high grass over the meadow and up a little hill!
🌸🌾🌳
It was a whole 15 minutes (including stops) but he did so incredibly well and was soooo happy!
After five months of restrictions, the black pearl could enjoy a real walk in the nature! And I swear, he knew he did well - he looked so proud.

The joy I felt with him and for him, the gratitude to Erica for her absolutely brilliant approach, dedicated work and mission to help him heal, the realization that with a thorough and professional plan IT IS POSSIBLE to achieve great results, and the feeling of accomplishment due to team work, Velho’s will and passion to run again - all those feelings overwhelmed me a little and happy tears rolled down my face as my beautiful boy basked in the afternoon sun.

This is not yet the end of this journey, as we have just entered the strength building stage. We still need to be careful and increase the load gradually, but we feel very very optimistic!

And on we go 🤗🐾🩵

In our last post we hinted an exciting upcoming event, we jokingly called the “Husky Spa Day”.
But not only was it actually two absolutely fantastic days, it was far beyond just a wellness-spa and we will try to dive into the details below. 😉

Professional dog physiotherapist Erica Yermikay had graciously offered to visit us for two days and do health and fitness check ups for our pack.
Since we have a whole group on the verge of retiring, and several goldies oldies, we asked if it would be possible to also assess them and help us create a training program for them with the sole focus on keeping them as fit for as long as possible.
Not only did Erica agree to help us with that, but she brought all her “arsenal” with her, from laser to different tools for rehabilitation and training AND she even shared a very thorough presentation on INJURY PREVENTION IN SLED DOGS! 🐾🙏❤️

We thought she would perhaps take a look at several dogs we felt needed some attention. But being the professional with so much passion for helping dogs and doing things thoroughly, she took her time to connect with each and every one of our 46 dogs!!!

She took extra time to take a look at our puppies who are 11 months old and we discussed about preparing youngsters the best possible way for a smooth transition from wild and free puppyhood to being a sled dog ❤️🙌

After meeting everyone we assembled a list of dogs to be looked at more thoroughly, we went to take a “break” and Erica shared her presentation on injury prevention.
We had no idea she was going to give us the full private presentation! Holy smokes, what a treasure chest of wisdom!
The presentation got pretty long as we shared and discussed about our different experiences in the area of training, conditioning, even race checkpoint routines, preventive care, resting, etc., etc.
Erica’s combined knowledge of athletic training - dog mushing and canine physiotherapy is extremely valuable and unique and if you ever come across any of her events (lectures, workshops etc.) or think of having your sled dogs professionally checked up, we cannot recommend her more warmly!

We could write and talk about this topic for hours, but let us just say this:
In over 30 years of sharing life with these incredible dogs, we have learned, among other things, that preventive care, proper training and feeding, attention to details and connection and compassion with your dogs makes all the difference in not only their performance, but even more importantly in their overall health, longevity and fitness, and not least importantly also in your mutual relationship.

Having your dogs checked up after and before a mushing season, between races (if you race), and addressing their needs at different life stages is not just a luxury “spa” treatment.
It can help you detect issues that, if caught and treated in time can be solved much easier. It can help your dogs perform better and longer if that is your focus. It can help your oldies who gave you their entire lives to age happily and without pain - and it will raise the bar of your health care for your pack overall.

For us, this visit by someone as competent and compassionate as Erica, was a step to a new dimension. Something we have been longing for and hoping for until it became a reality as we got to know her.

Now the first stages of improved care have their foundations laid out - our oldies have their training program. The dogs who need special attention for various reasons have their individual plans and programs. Some of them will be receiving individually fitted physiotherapy at Erica’s Sweden.

We have our work cut out ahead of us and we are excited to get started on this new level of care, with the newly obtained or deepened knowledge and an amazing new way how to connect with our beloved dogs ❤️🐾

And we can’t thank Erica enough for the gift she brings out to the world not only through her work, but also kindness and reassuring energy that enables all the dogs to trust her.

Oh yes, in case this post wasn’t cool and exciting enough, we have a super exciting announcement to share:
Fysio4Paws Sweden has become our official partner and sponsor 🐾🙌❤️🩵🐕🙏🤗
We cannot be more humbled, more proud and more grateful!

Dreams do come true, folks! Years ago we wished to welcome a canine physiotherapist on board our team…
Pinch us, we think we’re dreaming!

P.S. More text in captions under each photo 😉

Very exciting day ahead of us! 🐾🐾Stay tuned 😉

Many visitors and guests ask us why don’t we offer sled dog rides in the summer.
This is why.

Please be careful when excercising your dogs, and especially northern breeds in the summer.
Even on hikes, these dogs pull hard, they don’t walk slowly with a loose leash beside your feet. Make sure to carry plenty of water and offer it more often than you think your dog may need it.
Plan your route along creeks, lakes or rivers with access for your dog to go in and cool off. Many huskies who normally don’t like water, will surprise you by sudden interest to go in.

On longer walks and hikes we always carry some sort of electrolyte and/or lightly absorbed food for them to add a bit of minerals, salt and sugar into their bloodstream for support.
You can make a simple, inexpensive and effective electrolyte powder at home and put it into your dog’s water whenever needed.

If you would like to visit us during summer time, there are a lot of fun activities you can experience with our huskies: you can book a walk or wilderness hike or even a paddling adventure with them 😉🐕🐕☀️🌲

Be extremely careful when exercising your dogs in the summer!

Heatstroke in dogs is a life-threatening medical emergency. It occurs when a dog's body temperature rises above 104°F (40°C) and they cannot cool down. Symptoms include excessive panting, drooling, red gums, and collapse. Immediate cooling and emergency veterinary care are critical to prevent organ failure. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Key Warning Signs
Watch for these indicators, as a dog's condition can deteriorate rapidly:

• Respiratory: Heavy, noisy panting and difficulty breathing.
• Physical: Body temperature of 104°F or higher, thick/sticky drool, and bright red or purple gums and tongue.
• Neurological/Behavioral: Confusion, stumbling, weakness, or collapse.
• Severe Complications: Vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), seizures, or unconsciousness. [1, 2, 3, 6, 7]

What to Do Immediately
If you suspect your dog has heatstroke, every second counts. Take these steps right away:

1. Move to a cool area: Get them out of the sun and into an air-conditioned room or vehicle.
2. Start cooling safely: Wet your dog with cool (not icy) water. Applying cold shock can cause blood vessels to constrict and actually trap heat in the core. Use a fan to circulate cool air over them.
3. Offer water: Place fresh drinking water in front of them. Do not force them to drink, as this can lead to choking or inhalation.
4. Go to the veterinarian: Heatstroke requires intensive critical care. Even if your dog seems to recover, internal damage (like kidney injury or shock) can occur later. Get them to the nearest emergency animal hospital immediately. [2, 5]

High-Risk Dogs
Some dogs are far more vulnerable to overheating than others:

• Brachycephalic breeds: Short-nosed dogs like Pugs, Bulldogs, and French Bulldogs struggle to pant efficiently.
• Senior dogs and puppies: Their bodies have a harder time regulating temperature.
• Overweight dogs: Extra weight acts as insulation and makes their cardiovascular system work harder.
• Dogs with heavy or dark coats: They absorb and retain more heat. [11, 12, 13, 14, 15]

Hallo all friends, husky lovers, fans of the Kipp d’Amundsen Siberian Husky Racing Team and guests and visitors of our tiny family lifestyle company Nordic Husky Farm.

We have decided to create this GoFundMe fundraiser as an official way how you can help us, if you wish so, with building a VETERINARY EMERGENCY & SPECIAL DOG CARE FUND for our beloved dogs.

This isn’t for standard health care, but rather for helping cover the overwhelmingly expensive emergencies but also for helping us provide a little extra, specialized or little luxurious care for our goldies-oldies aka the retired senior dogs, to support our rescue and rehabilitation work with sled dogs in need who came and may come in the future to stay with us, physiotherapy, and other specialized care when needed.

You will find more details about the fundraiser and other ways how you can support us on the GoFundMe page in the link.

Also, in case you haven’t seen it yet, you can check out our previous post about one of our puppies Cha Cha eating three large stones and about the life-saving surgery she underwent two days ago.

If you would like to donate towards Cha Cha’s veterinary bill or send a general contribution, please know we are deeply grateful for any and all support and no amount is too small.

Thank you very much in advance and if you would share and spread the word in your network, it would mean a lot 🙌🐾💚🐕

Baby Cha Cha gave us a huge scare and worry on monday - we rushed her to the fantastic veterinary clinic Jämtlands Djurklinik AB in Östersund where a promt x-ray revealed (and confirmed our suspicion) three large stones in her stomach and intestine.

She underwent a life saving emergency surgery by Dr.Magnus Blix and team to whom we are eternally grateful 🙌, followed by post-op care.

While we are still operating in the “critical days” area, we are very hopeful and cautiously optimistic about our sweet girl’s full and speedy recovery.

We have now set up a GoFundMe fundraiser for a long overdue special fund we have been planing to create for veterinary emergencies and specialized dog health care for our all our dogs.
We will write about it in more detail and share part of our story in the next post.

If you would like to help us covering Cha Cha’s surgery and recovery costs or just generally support us and our huskies, you can contribute with a donation of whatever size you like. Every penny counts 😊🙌🐕🤎

The first 🐺HUSKY VISIT🐾 of the season, with lovely returning guests from the Netherlands.

We feel so honored when our guests come back, sometimes after a few years!

If you are planning to visit us, it is always good to send a quick short message or give us a call in advance, especially when we do not have the regular summer opening hours yet.

Welcome! 🐾🐺🌲

24/04/2026

The last snow is melting and the ice that held its strong grip over the lake has broke the other day.
Winter is officially over up here in the north and with that it is time for us to express our gratitude for the winter season of 2025/6 before we focus on the season of spring filled with lots of 101 time with our dogs, hiking trips, rebuilding and fixing, resting and recharging and preparing for the summer adventures.

Thank you so much to all our wonderful guests who visited us this past winter from all corners of the world, including Sweden, Poland, England, Germany, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, USA, Czech Republic, Spain, Danmark, Cyprus and other.

Thank you to our partners for a great and professional cooperation.

Thank you to our dear friends and family for your love, support and help - we truly couldn’t have done it without you! 🙌
Especially .silverr and .11.11 ❤️

But from the deepest bottom of our souls, thank you especially to our incredible, resilient, loving, tough, beautiful, trustworthy, beloved, incredibly athletic, kind, gentle, patient and sometimes not so patient, dependable, mischievous, funny, strong, inspiring and simply the best dogs 🐾🤎

We are eternally grateful for being able to do what we love, to continue living our life with our dogs in the northern nature and being able to share it all with you - our guests, followers, fans and supporters.

This past season was a challenging one filled with health issues, loss of trails, broken sleds, very cold temperatures (down to -38’C) and an incredibly hard work. It was almost 2 months shorter than our other winter seasons as well.
But the beautiful memories, laughter, adventure, camping trips, dog cuddles and your many kind words were all worth it!

We hope you’ll enjoy this little compilation made to look back at some of our favorite moments and memories of this past season and feel inspired to join us for the next one!

With love and gratitude,

Jachym, Katerina and the Husky Pack 🐾

🐾 VELHO’S REHABILITATION JOURNEY🐾
It has taken us a while to be able to share Velho’s journey from an injury he sustained in February (due to a high impact crash of a guest’s sled into a tree at full speed) to what we strongly believe to be a happy ending with a happy, healthy and fit little black pearl, leading his team across the frozen land again.

During a very thorough examination and xrays, Velho’s orthopedic dr. Magnus Blix from the wonderful Jämtlands Djurklinik was able to deliver the good news that nothing is broken or fully raptured, however the achiles tendon has been inflammed and one of the muscles that support it may have been partially raptured.
The treatment and recovery of such injury is known to be lengthy and because a specialized orthosis (brace) has to be used long term, partial muscle atrophy and issues resulting from compensation are another thing that has to be addressed and treated.

Velho received a very long and detailed treatment plan, which includes:

✅ Pain and inflammation reducing medication (NSAID), specifically Metacam (we were lucky to be able to use it only for 3 weeks 🙏) and we switched to a natural alternative called Traumeel, which is an excellent homeopathic medicine.

✅ Imobilization in form of a specialized orthosis with a removable hard shell, to be gradually dismantled as the healing and recovery progress alows, but a minimum of 9-12 weeks

✅ Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation which includes:
▪️ Laser therapy
▪️ Mobilization exercises
▪️ Massage

We have been extremely fortunate to receive a recommendation (shout out to Ly Hróðvitnir) to Erica Yermikay and her Fysio4Paws Sweden and she not only accepted Velho into her care, but assembled a detailed mobilizing exercise and massage plan for us based on her assesment and very thorough initial check.

We really want to emphasize here the importance of a professional and high quality physiotherapy, especially in case such as Velho’s, of a serious sports injury. The cooperation between the veterinary orthopedian, the physiotherapist and the dog’s (or horse’s) caretaker(s) is the key to optimizing the rehabilitation and achieving the best result.
And we feel so much gratitude for such incredible “support team” of professionals that help us navigate through Velho’s demanding healing journey.

Being able to fully trust your medical team with one of your furry kids is a special gift, and seeing how the treatment plan works and helps is priceless.
Thank you Erica from the bottom of our hearts for everything you are doing for our boy, we appreciate it so much. And we look forward to continuing with Velho’s therapy and learning from you how to improve the care of the mobility and thus well-being of our dogs 🙌

In addition to the above plan, Katerina (who is a certified herbalist, naturopath and canine nutritionist) set up a complimentary support for Velho, which includes:

🌼 Targeted diet and supplements
🌼 Traumeel homeopatic anti-inflammatory and pain relief, healing promoting medicne
🌼 Application of Traumeel homeopatic cream on the injured area
🌼 REIKI energy healing
🌼 LED light/LLLT therapy

Next time we’ll share about the diet and supplements we have composed for supporting Velho and his recovery.

Let us know if you are interested about anything specific and we’ll gladly share about it.

We are so happy that our shy boy is healing and feeling so much better already. No matter how long it will take for him to get back onto the trail, we strongly believe the black pearl will shine again at what he loves above anything in the whole world - leading his team through the northern wilderness 🙏🩵🐾
