innovate, don’t imitate.
sweden, 2004. jiu jitsu was rare. training partners were rarer. some sessions it was just me and an empty room.
so i built a solution. i found a gymnastics vaulting box and started using it as a training partner. push passing against it. jumping over it to simulate guard passing. side switches. movement drilling at a time when most people hadn’t even thought about that kind of solo work.
nobody told me to do it. there was no template. there was just a problem and a box and a willingness to figure it out.
the best things i’ve brought into my coaching didn’t come from copying what everyone else was doing. they came from moments like that one.
when you don’t have what you need, build something. that’s where real understanding comes from.
