Starting 2025 with some disappointing news, I'm afraid. I'm closing down The Clear Thought Project, which was the non-profit I was attempting to launch that was meant to provide media literacy/anti-propaganda teaching tools to American teachers, primarily by connecting them with educators here in Europe (where media literacy education is quite good) via short videos, webinars, etc.

Establishing non-profit status here in the EU was fairly easy but doing so in the US was a costly administrative headache. Additionally, big donors didn't quite know what to make of us - we're based in Europe but focused on the US, which shouldn't have been confusing but it was. Had we been based in Europe but focused on, say, the global south, no one would have had a problem, but here we are. On top of all that, I also had to deal with some pretty extraordinary personal and professional challenges this year and I simply didn't have enough left in the tank to focus properly on Clear Thought.

However! The cause is too important to me for me to walk away fully and I will have something new to announce very soon. Life is an iterative process, and I have been iterating.

Hey everyone -

I am proud to (finally) announce the launch of The Clear Thought Project!

The Clear Thought Project is a non-profit venture that will provide free, ready-to-use tools to educators who want to teach their students how to resist online disinformation and propaganda.

I don’t have to tell you how much damage online disinformation has already done to our democracy, and its impact on family relationships has been equally devastating. Young people are especially vulnerable. AI and deepfake technology are only going to make this bad situation worse - but there is good news! Research shows that media literacy education is remarkably effective at fighting disinformation.

A number of countries have already launched rigorous media literacy programs and have enjoyed good success with them. Unfortunately, no such nationwide effort exists in the United States. American teachers who want to join the fight against disinformation have struggled with a lack of materials for building their own media literacy programs.

The Clear Thought Project will make it possible for teachers in countries with successful media literacy programs to share their methods and experience with US educators, absolutely free of charge. This is not a webinar or online conference - this is teachers helping teachers. These tools are tried, tested, and ready to use right now.

 I like to do interesting things with pictures and sound. Here are some of the interesting things I’ve done. I did all of the post-production for these videos (editing, colour grading, etc.), and, where noted, wrote and directed them as well.
