“Kiruna is something of a rarity as a world-class fly fishing destination far north of the Arctic Circle that is easily accessed by train, road and daily scheduled flights. From Kiruna Airport, a twenty minute drive takes you to two of the greatest grayling and brown trout waters in Sweden – the Torne River and the Kalix River, which make up two of Sweden’s four major national rivers. In theory, you could be feeling that tug on the end of the line within an hour of touching down at the airport”.

Is it possible to rent fishing equipment in Kiruna?

Yes, most fishing tour companies offer this opportunity. For example, if you are in Kiruna and decide to go on a spontaneous fishing excursion, you can contact one of the tour companies to rent gear before you set off.

Another option is to stop in the city centre of Kiruna and buy your equipment. The well-stocked local outdoor stores offer everything that you could possibly need.

Hiring a fishing guide can be the key to a successful fishing experience, especially in an extensive area such as Kiruna. The guide will save valuable time by bringing you directly to the right type of fishing water. No need for time calculations or weather forecast checking. Your guide will take care of all the practical details, while you can relax and focus on the experience.

However, to hire a guide for the entire stay is not always necessary. You can choose to hire a guide for 1–2 days only. If your visit in Kiruna lasts several days, we recommend that you start off the holiday in the company of a professional guide.

Hiring a guide will greatly enhance your fishing experience. Not only do all fishing guides have their own areas of expertise – fly fishing in highland lakes; stream fishing in the mountains; dry fly fishing in tundra lakes etc. – they also have specialised knowledge of different species of fish. Choosing to fish in the company of a professional guide will multiply your chances of catching the fish of your dreams, and turning your vacation into an unforgettable experience.
