Raceday!
Saturday we wake up at around 05.00. Big breakfast and making sure I have all stuff for the bike and run.
We arrive early so no rush. Kalmar is looking beautiful with a lot of people and ready for this long day!
Slowly but steady... first 06.30, then 6.45 and not much longer the pro's enter the water. I start in the group of an estimated time of 1,5 hours. At about 07.10 my Ironman starts! A lot of people in the water but most of the time it all goes just fine. After a good 80 minutes I see there is still a lot to swim. Not gonna make the 1,30 but who cares. Step out of the water and see my wife Femke and stepdaughter Felicia. I move on to T1, seems like I am one of the last ones to start the bike, hardly any bikes left. About 10 minutes later I am on my bike and ready for 180km. Most of the course is beautiful, especially the Oland-bridge!!!, and after a good 5 hours I realise there's a marathon waiting for me...
Will I make it? My legs are pretty tired.
I will see what happens. Off to T2!
I change my stuff for the run and begin to run; 3 rounds of about 14k. Let's do the first one and see how I feel afterwords. 1,5 hour later, round 1 is a fact! Mmmm feeling ok! 6 months of training is really paying off. On to lap number 2. Blister after blister but not too painful so I keep on running. Lap number 2 is done. Just 1 more remaining. Then I realise I am going to make it!!! Wow, I'm going to finish after another 14k! Going to be an Ironman!
After picking up my third and last wristband (yellow) I have about 2k left. How will I react, how will I cross the finish line? A little tear and goosebumps all over during the last 500 meters. I see there is 1 guy after me and he is a big quicker. I let him pass because I want my own moment on the red carpet. One final turn and in the distance I see the red carpet with an enormous crowd, all cheering and shouting to the finishers. Now it is my turn!
I hear the speakers; 'the next finisher is coming'! 'From the Netherlands; Joris Rijnders, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!!!!!
I can't believe I made it, but I just did!!
After 13 hours and 22 minutes, I finally finished!!!
So, so happy!
IRONMAN Sweden and ALL volunteers; thank you all so much!!! I will never, ever forget the atmosphere, the crowds, the party, the course, the whole Ironman!
On to a next journey!!
