There was a job in the Edo called Sword Appriaisng Officer. There were two of them and they would manage the Shogun's swords, handle awarding swords to other Daimyo and swords received as gifts.
When the Shogun's sword needed to be tested they would arrange to visit the prison in Edo when an ex*****on would be carried out.
The testing would be done by the official ex*****oner, Yamada Asaemon (a heredity name/position) and overseen by other officials such as Honami, the official sword sharpener/appraiser. The Hinin are "non-humans" the lowest possible class in Edo Era Japan

An interesting look at the myth of samurai loyalty:

https://newvoices.org.au/volume-2/understanding-samurai-disloyalty/

"This article seeks to provide a foundation for further research, arguing that disloyalty was favoured among samurai to further their personal ambitions or interests. Disloyalty between medieval samurai was not always considered morally deplorable, nor was it considered divergent to normal’ samurai behaviour. Moreover, it is erroneous to argue that the majority of samurai were loyal,’ when in fact many were often being coerced or manipulated by those in power. Logic suggests that loyalty must be voluntary, thus the use of coercion undermines assertions of samurai loyalty."

Nishio Sensei was deeply concerned that aikido should not become stagnant, but that it should retain its aliveness, its vitality and its “budo nature.”

In one interview he said, “I want my Aikido to change and develop from day to day. Change keeps my students and me ‘fresh’ in both mind and spirit. That's my interpretation of O-Sensei's wish. Society changes. So why shouldn't Aikido? You have to be more independent and create your own way of Aikido – a way that is influenced by your own roots and traditions. Do not just copy the ‘Japanese way.’ If you are independent, you can develop your specific nature, and that is very, very important.”

Nishio Sensei pointed specifically to iaido, karate and judo as essential elements within his own aikido. In a broader sense there are striking arts and grappling arts. In the West our “roots and traditions” include things like boxing and wrestling which can naturally be incorporated into our understanding, expression and practice of aikido. It’s important to always use the whole body – hands, hips and feet.

It was all just an illusion 😄

Like popular conceptions of European chivalry, bushido is almost completely an invention of the nineteenth century. The historical fiction of a centuries old bushido code was almost entirely the product of two very different men, a Japanese Christian named Nitobe Inazō, and an anti-Christian Japanese philosopher named Inoue Tetsujirō. Nitobe’s work, originally published in English, convinced generations of Western scholars, while Inoue’s writings, which sold millions of copies in Japan, became the foundation of a nationalist cult of militarization and imperialism.
