HON GESA GATAME

Hon gesa gatame is the most fundamental holding technique (osaekomi waza).

Hon means ”base,” and gatame means ”holding” or ”immobilization.” Kesa is often translated as ”scarf,” but was actually a mantle worn by Buddhist monks.

In BJJ and grappling, the hold is better known as side control hold.

We practice Hon gesa gatame for:

• 5th Kyu yellow belt Dokan Ryu Ju Jutsu & Sport Ju Jutsu
• 5th Kyu yellow belt Kodokan Judo
• 5th Kyu yellow belt Nihon Kano Ryu Jujutsu

Technical details:

• Sit beside Uke with your weight against Uke’s lower ribs, wrap your right arm around Uke’s neck, and secure Uke’s left arm in your armpit. Exhale!

As with all pins, you should strive to make maximum use of your body weight. Maintain pressure on your opponent’s chest; breathing should be heavy and difficult for them.

You should be able to lie in the hold with a calm breathing rhythm and a lowered center of gravity.

During Uke’s attempt to escape:
• Exhale!
• Lower your center of gravity (through the tatami).
• Widen your base by parrying with your legs
