Euro NCAP 2026 puts up to 25 points on the line for driver monitoring.

Here's what the score actually covers 👇

• Up from 2 points in 2023 – now one of the most weighted categories in the entire protocol.

• Three behavioral states: distraction, drowsiness, and impairment. Systems have to cover all three.

• Speed and appropriateness of the response are scored, not just detection. Catching the event and then overcorrecting still costs points.

• Boundary conditions are where systems diverge: glasses, low light, subtle early-stage signals. That's where the gap between average and good shows up.

Customers visiting one of Scandinavia’s largest alcohol retailers this summer may notice something unusual. 👀

Inside the store is a small kiosk inviting them to scan their face and see how old the system thinks they are.

The setup is part of a pilot project exploring whether AI could support age verification for age-restricted purchases.

Alongside testing the technology itself, the project is examining how it performs in a busy retail environment and how both customers and staff respond to it.

Developed by Smart Eye subsidiary Sightic together with StrongPoint, the system estimates a customer’s age without storing any images or video.

Euro NCAP is giving car manufacturers more reason to look beyond basic (DMS).

Our latest order adds further interior sensing features to three vehicle models already equipped with Smart Eye software, helping the OEM improve their potential Euro NCAP performance.

As more manufacturers take the same approach, the value of Smart Eye’s existing DMS design wins can continue to grow beyond the functionality included in the original order.

Some of the biggest product improvements don't start as product ideas.

They start as customer questions.

One OEM asks for a capability.
Another applies it differently.
A third exposes a limitation nobody had seen before.

Over time, those experiences shape not just individual vehicle programs, but the technology itself.

Smart Eye's Matt Remijn explores why this happens in the latest article in his Value Between the Lines series.

July 7 is finally here.

As of today, every new vehicle sold in the EU must have a system that monitors whether the driver is paying attention to the road.

It's a date the automotive industry — and Smart Eye — has been working toward for a long time. We asked some of our team what it means to them.

Tomorrow, July 7, becomes mandatory in every new vehicle sold in the EU.

But for most manufacturers, meeting the legal minimum is only part of the picture.

The General Safety Regulation ( ) sets the baseline. , the independent safety rating organization whose five-star ratings influence purchasing decisions across the market, goes further.

Where the GSR requires detection of prolonged visual distraction, Euro NCAP also rewards systems that catch short repeated glances, drowsiness, microsleep, and from this year, signs of alcohol or drug impairment.

Around 70% of vehicles sold in Europe carry a five-star Euro NCAP rating, which means for most manufacturers, the GSR floor is just the starting point.

Only four days to go until the mandate comes into full force.

But just having the right technology isn't enough: ADDW systems also have to prove they work before they can be sold in the EU.

To get type approval, systems must meet strict criteria, including:

• Issue a distraction warning within 3.5 seconds of the driver's gaze leaving the road at 50 km/h or above (6 seconds between 20–50 km/h)
• Perform consistently across varying lighting, weather, cabin layouts, and driver profiles
• Process all data locally in a closed loop, without retaining biometric identifiers

Six days until the system mandate kicks in. Let’s talk about what these systems actually do.

Advanced Driver Distraction Warning systems use in-cabin cameras to track head position and eye movements in real time.

When a driver's gaze has been off the road for too long, the system issues an alert — visual, auditory, or haptic — to bring their attention back.

Steering and lane-keeping data can tell you something has gone wrong, but not where the driver is actually looking – which is why the GSR's ADDW requirements can't be met without direct .

In just under one week, on July 7, the EU's mandate comes into full force.

From that date, every new vehicle sold on the European market — cars, trucks, and buses — must include a system that actively monitors whether the driver is paying attention to the road.

This is the final stage of a rollout under the EU's General Safety Regulation ( ), and the broadest yet: it applies to every new vehicle across all four-wheeled categories, an estimated 18 million per year. No ADDW system, no sale.

This week and next, we'll be counting down to July 7 with the key things to know about the mandate.
