Why are we monitoring ozone?

Ozone can protect life on earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, but it is also a harmful air pollutant that can affect human health, crops, and forests. As ozone can be transported over long distances, elevated concentrations may occur even far from apparent sources of air pollution. Monitoring ozone therefore helps us understand air quality, assess levels against air-quality targets, and provide timely information when concentrations become a concern. ☁️Application of the Month: Long-term Sampling of Dioxins☁️

Within the European Union, the waste incineration BAT conclusions (WI-BATC) calls for sampling of PCDDs, PCDFs, dioxin-line PCBs, and states maximum concentrations (TEQ weights per volume) obtained either during short-term or long-term sampling. DOAS stands for Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy. The acronym DOAS itself reveals quite a lot of what it is about. “Spectroscopy” is the study of interaction between matter and light, and that is indeed what happens. “Absorption” specifies the optical effect utilized: some wavelengths are absorbed by the molecules. “Optical” tells which wavelengths are in use, and “differential” is the mathematical method applied to the detected spectra, allowing gas concentrations to be calculated. Our monitoring system for marine applications, M800, are one of many OPSIS' products that are based on the method. ☁️Application of the Month: Marine Monitoring☁️

Many of us who are not in the marine shipping business probably think of vessels as practical means of transportation, or, when it comes to cruising ships, a place to spend your vacation. However, not all of us realize that large ships also are floating large power plants, with all aspects that come with power plants including potential contribution to air pollution.

The environmental aspects of shipping have perhaps mainly been an issue to people living close to major ports, but maritime organizations have for the past decade or so started to address the shipping industry’s impact on air quality.

Marine environments require marine systems. The OPSIS System M800 for shipboard installation is based on the DOAS technology and can be used for emissions monitoring and for monitoring SO2 scrubbers.
