Section nr15

Following on from yesterdays post, this is some orienteering intervals I planned for Eksjö SOK pre 10MILA training camp.

The sessions was "Fox and Hounds". It is a fun type of intervals where on each interval, someone ("the fox") starts and put out control. 45sec later a group starts ("the hounds"), the hounds try to catch the fox. 30sec after the hounds, "The Hunt Master" starts. The hunt master tries to catch everyone while collecting the controls as they go.

The prepose is to deal with pressure at speed.

Fagerkullen, Mariannelund. i believe this hill is possibly the most relevant terrain for 10MILA 2026. I have been search for somewhere with a mix of fast open forest, rocky under foot but also with a good path network. This is my best guess.

Section nr10 - Rocky fun.

Really nice area with a lot boulder. Smaller stones around 1.2-1.5meter with the bigger stones over 2m.
Mainly larger open pine forest next with some sections of denser spruce.

Nice big slope (100m elevation gain). Not "big" for most countries but in Sweden that feels quite big. Especially walking up and down each day as the only place to park was at the bottom😅

Route choices, what do you think?

Section nr8

At the end of 2024 one of the H60s said to me "its always fun to run your course because you have a long leg and we don't usually get many of those at normal training, only in races."

This got me thinking about a lot of things...

1- Why is not everyone planning a long leg in training? Simple, its easier and faster to plan a course with more controls.

2- Its an area of orienteering/a skill that I've noticed to be on the decline. Even if an athlete picks the best "route" they very often don't simplify and execute good "rough" orienteering (over orienteering/ reading the map too much to know exactly where they are (which is not important during they leg)).

3- Why are we not talking about this missing skill anymore? We praise athletes for not loosing time in mistakes but forget how much time they loose slowing themselves down unnecessarily (better to run roughly + aggressively and use 15-20sec redirecting/calculating at the end of the leg vs slowing down 25-30sec to be extra secure mid leg?) Obviously, its about when to do this vs when to be secure (calculating risk vs reward).

4- I dont like the "forcing straight" trend/fashion orienteering is in at the moment. Its not always the best and it doesn't suit every athlete.

Anyhow, rant over... Basically I add a longer route choice leg into nearly every training now. Even if its not the best leg at least people are starting to look wider😅

This was part of a long session I planned for .

I believe maze orienteering develops route planning, memorizing what your plan was + concentration. I also understand that it forces you to orienteering in a way that you wouldn't/shouldn't in a race (lots of intense map reading, without much simplification and reading the terrain ahead), but early in winter training it may highlight some things you are not so strong. Therefore you know what you need to focus more on them over winter.

Section nr4

Over the last couple of years I have had a couple of contracts that has now meant that all of the West part of Eksjö has a new sprint map. This section is part of the hospital grounds.
