Here we go!

I am not sure if this is historically accurate (accoding to Google it is ...) but as Sepp Herberger once said:

“After the game is before the game."

So, the Lapland Arctic Ultra 2027 will start March 7th. The entry fees are set and the forms to sign up are ready. If you want to participate, please contact me on WhatsApp, here on facebook or send an email.

Wow, what a great race we’ve had! Of course, it could have been a bit colder towards the middle and end of the race, but we were lucky to start in a true winter wonderland. Our training course participants even experienced temperatures close to -30°C. That’s great preparation for any future winter adventures they will hopefully undertake.

Day one was as good as it gets. Perfect conditions and an amazing setting with the “Lapland Arctic Arena” right at our Grand Arctic Resort start line. Överkalix Kommun and many local businesses and initiatives were there hosting a variety of activities, including a kids’ race. This year’s program even included kick sled races in Rödupp, our 20 km finish line, and later in Lansjärv, where we have one of our checkpoints on loop #2. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this effort – Överkalix municipality for coordinating and the local businesses for their support!

With a record race roster, there are always challenges. You wonder if everything will work the way you want it to. We made some changes, added more guides and volunteers, set up more tents on Laxforsberget, and updated some procedures for this crucial checkpoint. It worked really well. Jockfall checkpoint ran like a charm, and Polar Circle Cabin #1 – which was very busy and operating with limited infrastructure – also handled everything perfectly.

Another important aspect was being transparent with the athletes and making sure they understood that checkpoints would be busy, with a lot of movement and noise. Those who needed peace and quiet were able to adjust and find places to rest between checkpoints. At the same time, I believe we still managed to maintain the personal contact with our athletes that we value so much. For me and the entire team, getting to know our participants – and if possible, knowing them by name rather than just by a bib number – is very important. That was still possible this year, and I loved it.

If any of you are wondering whether we want to have even more athletes in the future, the answer is “no” – at least not in the longer distances. We may be able to grow the 20, 50, and 85 km races, but we will keep the 185 km and 500 km races at roughly the same total we had this year.

Speaking of numbers, here are some short statistics on how many started and how many finished:

20 km: 7 starters, 6 finishers
50 km: 7 starters, 7 finishers
85 km: 3 starters, 2 finishers
185 km: 35 starters, 28 finishers
500 km: 24 starters, 15 finishers

For a winter ultra, I would say these are really good numbers in terms of finisher percentages. The results for the 185 km race are particularly impressive. For those who are new to this type of ultra, it’s the perfect distance – and the training course before the race helps a lot as well.

Like in any ultra, some athletes were not able to achieve their goals. A couple of participants had stomach problems, there was a chest infection, and others struggled with the physical strain that this kind of race can cause – and of course simple exhaustion. As frustrating as that can be, I hope you have all recovered well and will give it another go!

To all athletes who finished – once again, congratulations! You all did incredibly well, from the first finisher to the last.

A big thank you also to the entire crew: Sam, Pat, Marie, Peter, Alastair, Callum, Anya, Maud, Julia, Anna, Brie, Alex, Alex B., Trish, Sophie, Magdalena and Erik.

Thank you to our guides: Roland, Arnold, Henrik, Daniel, Mats, David, Robin, Tord and Mikael.

Thank you to our checkpoint hosts: Robin, Ann-Sophie Hans, Niclas & Team at Jockfall, Eva, Jan and all the others who put in so much work at Leipojärvi, and Tord and all the helpers in Lansjärv!

Thank you to all the snowmobile clubs for the endless hours of trail breaking, grooming and marking!

Thank you Prisma Överkalix for the help with getting our markers ready for the race!

And last but not least, thank you to our sponsors and supporters: Bright Equipment, Jockfall Fishing & Activities, Grand Arctic Resort by Explore the North, REKO Biluthyrning i Norrbotten AB, Sveaskog, SCA, Peter Mild Designs, SOTO Outdoors Germany, Fjällcom Satellite SOS, INNOVA Print & Reklam, Heart of Lapland, Swedish Lapland, Visit Överkalix, and Gällivare Kommun.

Over the course of the race I spent some time on the trail, in the checkpoints, and at the finish line trying to capture moments from this year’s Lapland Arctic Ultra.

The gallery from the race is now online for anyone who would like to take a look.

If you’d like to revisit the race, find photos of yourself or friends, or keep a memory from this year’s event, high-resolution downloads and prints are available through the gallery.

🏁 519 Pawel Dregan - 2nd on Foot 🏁

Crossing the finish line in Överkalix, Pawel Dregan secured 2nd place on foot, behind this year’s winner 503 Thierry Corbarieu.

Immediately recognisable in his head-to-toe Jack Wolfskin kit, Paweł arrived looking composed after a strong and consistent race. Waiting at the line was Thierry himself, and the two shared a moment together celebrating and congratulating - one athlete welcoming another after the long journey through Lapland.

Not long after finishing, Pawel began the long journey home, facing two to three days of driving before finally settling in for some well-earned rest. We hope he at least pushed the seat back and had a rest during the road-trip with a lot of snacks after his epic supermarket run to stock up on supplies!

A fantastic race and a superb result.

Well done Pawel.

🏁 504 Rob Wilkinson 🏁

At 03:57, after what must have felt like a very long final stretch of trail, Rob Wilkinson crossed the finish line.

Sore ankles, weary bones, and the weight of many kilometres carried over several days were all evident. But as always, he was welcomed in by crew and locals, ready to cheer him across the line and celebrate the moment.

Finishing the Lapland Arctic Ultra is the goal, how long it takes is irrelevant, but the time spent on the trail accumulates. The longer you are out there, the deeper the race settles into the body, and the recovery that follows is often the hardest part.

Throughout his journey, Rob has also been raising money for charity, pushing through the long days and cold nights not just for himself, but to make a positive difference for others. That effort deserves real recognition.

Even after everything the trail had taken from him, Rob still managed to cross the line looking like a model straight off the runway - fatigue and all.

An incredible effort from a remarkable athlete.

Well done Rob.

🏁 510 Kimberly Lynn Rowan & 512 Emiel Knepper 🏁

Side by side through the final dark kilometres, Kimberly Lynn Rowan and Emiel Knepper made their way steadily toward the finish line.

Waiting for them there was something special – a whole crowd of loved ones, ready with cheers, hugs, and a celebration worthy of the journey they had just completed.

Beer, sweets, doughnuts, they had it all. But nothing quite compares to the feeling of being welcomed back into the world wrapped in the embrace of the people who care about you most. Along with some much needed calories!

Now safely recovering, we suspect thoughts are already turning toward the next adventure.

Well done both.

🏁 513 Anne Green 🏁

After many kilometres spent enjoying the quiet and solitude that the wilderness brings, Anne Green crossed the finish line and stepped back into civilisation.

Applause, a small crowd, and even a bag of sweets were waiting to welcome her in.

Calm, relaxed, and looking like she had taken the whole experience in her stride (though we’re sure there were a few tougher moments along the way), Anne arrived with the quiet satisfaction that comes at the end of a long journey.

Soon after, she was warmly welcomed back to the Villa to rest and recover.

Well done Anne.

🏁 517 Irjen Jayadi 🏁

Looking strong and full of energy, Irjen Jayadi crossed the finish line in style: jumping up to touch it as he arrived!

Not only did he look composed and powerful after the long journey, he also managed to time his finish perfectly with the sunset, giving his arrival an unforgettable backdrop.

True to his character, Irjen remained humble at the line, taking the time to thank 502 John Knapp for the help and guidance he received both leading up to and during the race.

A strong finish, a beautiful moment, and a wonderful spirit throughout the event.

It was a pleasure having you with us, Irjen.

Well done!

🏁 523 Johannes Straub 🏁

A sprint to the line, a dramatic collapse at the finish, and a warm welcome from fellow athletes - Johannes Straub brought his race to an end in memorable style.

Despite the usual aches, pains, and post-race creaking, Johannes arrived looking strong, smiling as always, his blue eyes laser-focused on the destination that had drawn him forward for so many kilometres.

With sweets in hand, a beer on order, and a quick transfer arranged back to Jockfall, we suspect the celebrations are well underway.

Now it’s time to rest, recover, and perhaps be ready to greet the crew when they arrive tomorrow.

Well done Johannes.

🏁 518 Andre Hablawetz 🏁

Arriving at the finish early this morning just as daylight began to appear, Andre Hablawetz crossed the line under the soft light of another Arctic dawn.

Greeted by crew, the Race Director, and the quiet beauty of the morning sky, Andre received his medal and took a moment to enjoy the calm that comes with the end of a long journey.

Soon after, he joined Jacob and Henning at the Villa, settling in to recover while awaiting Johanne’s finish. Now the Grand Arctic Hotel has opened its doors, he’s happily recovering, and we hope he’s enjoying the spa too!

A strong effort and a memorable athlete, welcomed gladly across line.

Well done Andre.

🏁 514 Jacob Gardner & 515 Henning Lorenzen 🏁

In the early hours of the morning, two head torches appeared along the frozen river, drawing steadily closer to the finish line in Överkalix.

Side by side, Jacob Gardner and Henning Lorenzen arrived together, greeted by crew with medals, applause, and the warm welcome that follows a long journey on the trail.

Two good sportsmen crossing the line together, no need for a photo finish here. Camaraderie and sportsmanship in abundance.

After the celebrations, crew escorted them up to the Villa for some well-earned rest before beginning the next stage of the journey home. Sore feet, sore shins, sore Achilles – it has certainly been a soft trail, snow shoe filled year. Both are now safely making their way back towards Jockfall as the decompression begins.

Along the way, Jacob also raised funds for the AGS Foundation, supporting people facing mental or physical disability, or long-term injury. He has raised £1,175 so far, and if you’d like to support the cause, you can find the link in his bio.

A fantastic effort from both athletes.

Well done Jacob and Henning.
