TIP OF THE DAY!

Always expect your opponents to attack when you’re at the kitchen line. It’s easy to relax after hitting a great dink or seemingly unattackable shot, but that’s often when opponents will try to take their chance. If you aren’t ready, even a poor attack can catch you off guard.

Stay prepared to defend every ball, no matter how good your shot was. By expecting the attack, you’ll be in a better position to counter it, and punish your opponent when they make a risky or weak choice.

THE KITCHEN

Stay out of the kitchen (mostly)
The 7-foot zone at the net is the "kitchen." You can't hit a ball out of the air while standing in it. You can step in to play a ball that bounces there. This one rule is what makes pickleball a game of touch instead of a smash-fest.

THE DOUBLE BOUNCE

Let it bounce twice to start
The serve must bounce before the return, and the return must bounce before the serving team hits it. After those two bounces, anyone can hit the ball out of the air.

SERVING

Serve underhand, cross-court
Contact the ball below your waist and hit it diagonally into the opposite service box. It just needs to land in. Nobody expects aces.

SCORING

Games go to 11, win by 2

Only the serving team can score a point. In doubles you'll hear three numbers called, like "4-2-1." That's your score, their score, and which server you are. It confuses everyone for the first two games, then clicks forever.

You can't make an error on a ball your opponent never had to hit.

Every time you get the ball in, your opponent has to do something with it. And they might miss. That's the math of pickleball. The player who gives their opponent the fewest free points usually wins. You don't need to hit winners. You need to hit one more ball than they're comfortable dealing with.
